YES aha-ha. But I still want a remake. Gimme.

I don't think 'mebbe' is a translation error. I think it's an attempt at a phonetic accent.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've seen it other places too.

I thought the secret was referring to 'this guy are sick'

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Many lower-class accents have 'maybe' written as 'mebbe.'

The bottom pic, however? Yeah, that's a goof.

The "off course" in the Gold Saucer Battle Arena bugged the hell out of me... mostly because I kept seeing it repeatedly trying to get Omnislash, but everything else is charming and adorable. ;_; ♥ It'd be hilarious if there were typos in the subtitles and the voice actors went along with them.

[identity profile] lady-supernova.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda agree with you, actually. But I'd still like a remake, even if just for graphics update.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Even with a remake, the original is not going anywhere!

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like a remake because holy crap, FFXIII-grade graphics + FFVII = Jesus
But the original with its silly lego people and typos has a different character that a remake wouldn't be able to keep. I'd have both versions, and play depending on the feel I want. Win - win situation.~

[identity profile] polymorph80.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
They kept "you spoony bard" in FFIV GBA, so I think "This guy are sick" is probably safe.

Besides, a shit game is a shit game whether it gets remade or not (and FFVII is shit).

Besides, a shit game is a shit game whether it gets remade or not (and FFVII is shit).

Ooh, what a controversial and edgy opinion!

[identity profile] polymorph80.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, what a predictable and obvious response! :-p

Sorry, but I've played through it plenty of times and I still can't figure out any reason why people rave about it. Except the snowboarding game at the Gold Saucer, which is kinda fun.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-19 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
For many people, FFVII was their very first RPG. Their very first "big game".

This is a game that came out when developers were still struggling with 3D, especially on the PSone. Game stores were filled with clunky, awkward 3D games with dodgy controls, ugly textures and horrible bloopy soundtracks.

So naturally, people (especially those in the West) were VERY excited for FFVII. I still have my Playstation Magazines from back then, filled with speculation about the game's plot, and "teaser" screenshots that the editors tried to decipher and understand. Meanwhile us readers goggled over the graphics and the characters, wondering how ANY game could possibly be big enough to warrant three whole Playstation discs. Surely it couldn't be real! For months, we read about this ~magical~ game called Final Fantasy VII that was getting rave reviews in Japan for its incredible story, its deep characters, it creepy villain (though everyone got a laugh at Sephiroth's "Out of my way! I'm going to see my mother!" - Out of context, that screenshot was hilarious!), and it's amazing soundtrack. Nobody could believe the rumors or the screenshots. We had to see the game ourselves.

FFVII was to RPGs what Resident Evil was to survival-horror and what Super Mario 64 was to 3D platformers.

Whether you find FFVII a good game is all a matter of taste. But I think it's harsh to say it's overrated or doesn't deserve the hype. It is, after all, the game that brought JRPs into the Western mainstream. It opened up a whole new world of possibility to the RPG genre.

I don't want a remake because I don't trust Nomura to NOT add in Gackt or other some such ridiculous ret-cons.

Believe me, I was tempted in order to get updated graphics for Wall Market...but I just don't trust Nomura, esp. after the bullshit he pulled with Parasite Eve: 3rd Birthday.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Toriyama is responsible for 3rd Birthday. Nomura just did art.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think Nomura claimed credit for making the 'difficult' player decision: whether or not to take battle damage in order to reveal more of Aya's skin.

Just sayin'.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
He already put Genesis in the Sephiroth flashback. That is why I do not want the remake.

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto to the hundredth degree. As much as I want a eye-humpingly good graphical romp, I would rather forsake the eyecandy than deal with what a mess the FFVII canon has become.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I felt kind of the same way about the DS Chrono Trigger >_>

[identity profile] polymorph80.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"They're tone-deaf, evil fiends!" God I miss that line.

(Plus the Lost Sanctum was a complete pile.)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
After the bullshittery that was Dirge of Cerberus, I don't trust Square to make a remake that even remotely resembles FFVII. Seriously, they took two of the most memorable places in FFVII (Nibelheim and Kalm) and turned them into the most boring, generic, grey, corridor-filled areas they could make. It's as if they said "okay, we need to remake these two locations...but without ANY charm or nostalgia!"

[identity profile] jukeboxhound.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not just losing the charm, but also the crack. One of my biggest pet peeves with the rest of the Compilation is how it went from a strange combo of crack and angst to pretty much solid ~ANGST. The original game didn't take itself so seriously as the later editions, and for me that was half the fun.

Also echoing [livejournal.com profile] inuyatta: the retconning would change it enough that it just...wouldn't be the same.

[identity profile] xi-feng.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love a remake, but I do wonder if they'd be able to get away with some of the more questionable moments in the game nowadays -- you can do Cloud & the bodybuilders getting down in the hot tub or Cloud beating the crap out of Aeris in the Temple of the Ancients with little lego people, but watching the hero of the game lay into one of the girls with his fists with modern realistic graphics? I think SE would be tempted to shy away from showing us that, which is a shame since it's one of the things that's integral to the story and to Cloud's crippling self-doubt later on in the game.

I'd like to give SE the benefit of the doubt, but we all know that doesn't always pay off.

+1

[identity profile] morethanwords.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
pretty much this. I don't see any way that SE could keep some of the darker/more desperate/disturbing/sexually confusing/violent scenes and keep it at a rating they'd be willing to do. Between that and a strong distrust after their recons in Crisis Core and the change to basic personality structures and character development in Advent Children, as much as I'd love beautiful graphics, I just can't bear the thought of what they'd do if they tried to remake it. I'll just keep my lego people - and my story - intact, thank you very much.
