Yes, Rory calls him out on it; but in the end, the Doctor STILL wasn't the one who had to make the choice. Calling out is one thing; actually making the Doctor DEAL with the consequences is another.

Well have you seen tonight's episode? I don't want to say anything else if you haven't.

When I say "consequences", I mean, like, having the Doctor stand at the door and not let older!Amy in, not making Rory do it. Unless tonight's episode revisits that scene and makes the Doctor do that, it doesn't change my point at all.

let's put it this way: the ep's fairly random (and a few things are pretty WTF after last week) but moffat's last 5 minutes of continuity tie-in should have been part of last week's episode. the doctor seems to actually face up the consequences of his actions, for once, and also it ties in nicely with his guilt-trip from let's kill hitler.

Bullshit, that is not was consequences are. Dealing with consequences means dealing with the results of your actions and decisions, not simply being forced to do something (in this case, closing the door). The consequences here are Rory's and Amy's reaction to his lie.

Having him be the one closing the door would actually cheapen the situation, because Rory promised old Amy a few scenes prior that he would never abandon her again.

But God beware the writers actually trying to give some depth to a situation, apparently any attempt of subtlety goes right over the had of some fans.

This.

My problem with this horrible episode is not that he closes the door. It's that he lies to her and manipulates her into bringing back young Amy, intending all along to kill the current version.

He killed one of his companions so that he could bring back a younger 'nicer' version of her. Despite her saying that's not what she wanted.

Say he showed up at Sarah Jane Smith's doorstep. "Sarah," he said, "You've been having hard times. Let me bring forward a past version of you to go adventuring with. All you've experienced will be wiped out."

"No," says Sarah. "I don't want to give up on the person I am. I'll only do this if both of us can live."

This season seems to be determined to make the Doctor an awful person.

"This season seems to be determined to make the Doctor an awful person."

Welcome to Moffat-land. This is starting to get even worse than when they tried to kill the show with Six.

(Tho' I do have a fondness for "Trial of a Timelord." So sue me.)

IMNSHO? They could have ended the episode on the Gibbis asking for a lift to the nearest galaxy. That would have been the Doctor Who I remember.

Or, Moffat could have dropped Amy and Rory the same way the First Doctor dropped off Ian and Barbara; that would have been a nice touch.

Not a big fan of the tears-and-hugs-and-Coronation Street ending to the whole Amy/Rory/River run, personally.

the most charitable interpretation I've heard is that he was willing to take whichever of them got through the door first, but even then it squicks the hell out of me. and unfortunately the show never plays it like this, he seems too set on 'saving' amy from herself for me to really doubt it was the younger version he wanted all along.

but hey, as donna has already taught us, when does a guy ever have to listen to a woman telling him no? it'll be fine, because agency is only for the doctor.
