But even in old!who, he could be an asshole. Think of One nearly killing a person, think of all the drama around Six, think of Seven being manipulate. Secondly, no way is the Doctor cold-hearted. Remember in Let's Kill Hitler where he feels so guilty over himself, Rose, Martha and Amy that he can't even talk to them as interfaces?

Technically, the Doctor has killed LOTS of people...
And at least if he's doing it, he's being responsible, instead of making other people do the dirty work for him, which seems to be something of a trend for him lately.
