I'm thinking of taking Japanese at some point, but unfortunately my college doesn't offer it--so I'd have to take it at another college next year. Just out of curiosity:

What pace do classes usually go at (i.e. how many kanji do you learn a week?)? So far I've just been trying to learn them on my own at 10 per day and so far I'm on the easier ones so they're not too hard to remember, but I'm worried about when they'll get harder. What do you do to practice/learn them in class?

I think they're teaching differently at every University or college. I have to learn 50 Kanjis in a week plus 30 new words and the grammar.
I think you really have to write them very often and you also have to learn all readings and radicals of each Kanji. And every Kanjis has it one stroke order.

I'm learning with file cards so I can use them while taking the train or before I go to bed.
It's not so easy but hey, every Language is kind of hard to learn ^^ Sometimes I hate it, but most of the time I love it xD

Oh and very important: mnemonics!! I would die without them xD

We learned about 15 every unit which lasted about a week and a half to two weeks. Easier ones are OK, but second year Japanese got to be a bit of a doozy. We practiced writing them out a lot and were expected to use the kanji we knew for writing assignments and on the current unit test.
