I'm taking a year off Japanese at school, too, and I know I'm going to forget all my kanji ><
But yeah, there was once an episode of some talk show where celebrities I like had to read something, and one girl stumbled only to have the presenter tease her and tell her she should have practiced the kanji. It's hard for native speakers, too. Kanji doesn't really come naturally.
