You know, I find it to be terribly irksome when people say "learning what it is to be a (wo)man".

I'm glad it inspired you, but there is not one right way to be a woman. Or a man.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you've not read the book, then? Because the main point of that book is that "the right way to be a woman" is to be exactly who you are and not let others dictate to you who or what you are, along with a healthy dose of examination of societal pressures and expectations for both genders as well as the kind of effects that our early impressions have left on us of the role for a woman (or man) to fill. I get what you're saying, but you should know that the last thing anyone would take away from that book is the idea that there is only One Right Way to be anything.

Re: OP

That's what I loved about the books, myself. They're a tad bit dated, but the message is still strong, imo. And it's exactly like you said - she shows that there is no "one true way", and more than that, that you can change your mind in the middle about what "kind" of woman you want to be, and that's perfectly valid.

I don't care. It's still a horrible phrase to use. You could've made your point a different way.

oh my god, you're an idiot.

Re: OP

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not really? I'm sorry that hearing the phrase "what it means to be a woman" makes me rage regardless of context and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
This comment is horrible. Cry more.

You're horrible, probably.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I agree with you. I think it's a horribly dated and sexist term.

Wow. Get over yourself.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-21 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I explained my point above. If you still don't get it, I don't know what you expect me to do. Beyond that, you should probably know I don't feel bad about my phrasing at all. In fact, I'm making a face at you right now as I type this.

In this case, I apologize!

I first read it at 13.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-21 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what age you teach, but I first read it at...I think I was 14? I'd say personally that ages 14-16 would be the perfect age to first read it, but it's a great book for any age =)

Yep.

[identity profile] ilikebinglee.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
This is an omnibus of The Shattered Chain and Thendara House? Man I loved the Shattered Chain, it made a great impression on me when I read it as a teenager, also.

MZB was ruined for me when I learned about her relationship with her NAMBLA-founder husband. So now I pass the ruination on to you:

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god dammit.

God dammit.

Welp.

I've always been able to successfully separate author's views from good works. But shit man, shit. You can't do that with fucking NAMBLA. You just can't.

Thanks Anon, truly, it's something people should know. Also fuck you.

[identity profile] uponadecember.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Dear God, that's horrible. I still like her writing, but any respect I had for her as a person is gone.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus, I don't even know who this is and now I want to hide. Even though they're dead.

*huddling under blanket*

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Holy crackers. That entire conversation is just so unreal. Especially where she derails the talking to the boy's mom about her husband having sex with her kid with their petty "whose the better author" drama.
