I know this secret is about the BBC Sherlock fans reaction to the CBS show, but can we also talk about the resentment over Sherlock losing at the Emmys? The Sherlock tag on tumblr was good for a few laughs after they lost.

SORRY TO SAY, BUT DOWNTON ABBEY IS AN AMAZING SHOW AND DESERVED ITS WIN.

OH GOD REALLY. The number of posts that were like "I didn't know it was nominated for anything and I've never seen anything it was up against, but RAEG THAT IT LOST!!!" was unbelievable

I had no idea it was nominated for anything. Then again, the fandom in general pisses me off, so I'm like, way out of the loop on everything.

The thing about this CBS thing, too, is that it's not even going to be properly Holmes, from what I understand. Isn't it also going to include elements of something else, and be fairly strictly American anyway?

IDK. I'll reserve judgement. I expected the BBC one to fail pretty hard, actually. After the amount of people who refused to accept RDJ as Holmes, it didn't seem likely that Holmes would be accepted with a mobile phone and an internet connection. Whoops.

I found it weird that Downtown Abbey was nominated to begin with. 7 episodes is pretty damn long for a miniseries, especially when there's a season 2 underway.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It was odd that it was in the mini series category, but in the US it aired as four 90 minute long episodes and time wise it was the same length as Mildred Pierce which was also in the miniseries category. And I think at the time it was being aired in the US a second series hadn't been announced.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh OK. That makes more sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
They both have a season 2 underway, and Downton Abbey may have been 7 episodes vs 3, but in terms of minutes it's only an hour longer than Sherlock, altogether.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
There have been 10 part miniseries in the past. 7 is still considered short. Americans are used to 20+ episodes per season.

F'REAL. all the sherlock stans on my twitter timeline were like "SLKDfjlasjdfaf >:| >:| >:|" and i was like "stfd omg it's going to win a crapton of BAFTAs anyway"

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
What was it even nominated for? I checked the bigger miniseries noms because I thought it might get a courtesy nod but didn't see it or any actors listed. Downtown Abbey deserved the wins it got (as much as I like Sherlock, it has some fairly major issues, whereas Downton Abbey was the most critically acclaimed series of the year overall) but I was a bit surprised that Idris Elba got a nod for Luther (a decent but by no means remarkable show) but neither Freeman nor Cumberbatch were nominated for Sherlock, when the casting was Sherlock's greatest asset besides cinematography.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sherlock was nominated for a few categories I think but it was up against Downton for best writing in a miniseries, and Downton won that.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Writing, of all things? I would have been peeved if Sherlock won for best writing over Downton Abbey. I'm in the Sherlock fandom and I really enjoy the series, but the writing... There's a lot of flash and style and fun Sherlock/John dynamic compensating for mediocre writing in that series.

I'm going to agree with you here. I really, really like BBC's Sherlock but after re-watching what there is of it thus far, I realized that there is some really crappy writing in there disguised by neat cinematography and bromance that seems to be mostly the actors' doing. I mean, it's fun and all, but it shouldn't be winning awards for writing.

I really need to check out Downtown Abbey. It's been recommended to me twice today and Netflix appears to have it. I think it's a sign.

DO IT. But make sure you have enough time to mainline the entire thing because it is ADDICTIVE
