OP - Clarification on 'boring' (a bit tl:dr)
(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:50 am (UTC)(link)I'm sure there might be other words, and this is such a petty thing, but I came to love ELO after being part of several RPS fandoms, so I came to see ELO through those eyes as well. Except. Most of the ideas I've had for fic are all ridiculous AUs that might as well be original fiction because there's nothing else to write about. There's just not a lot to get excited about, y'know?
Perhaps the lack of fandom also adds to this. There's no one to bounce ideas off because no one else I know seems to know the band like I do. IDK if anyone else would even want to read ELO fic. I'm a bit worried of being ostracised for daring to see things that way, even though I'd never claim it was true at all. I'm just having fun with my ideas. So I've never joined any ELO comms or anything. I don't really talk about it with anyone. Not sure anyone else sees things like I do. (I ship Jeff Lynne/George Harrison, if that's any indication. But Beatles fandom won't have me either. So. :/)
I also have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Jeff Lynne as well. Love the early stuff, love the dodgy 80s stuff no one else seems to like (including Balance of Power; I love that shit), but the rest of it? I could take it or leave it, depending on how I feel. I can go through a week where I skip past ELO tracks to suddenly hearing Shangri-La or Strange Magic and remembering why I love this band.
And of course I started listening to The Move and to Roy Wood's stuff, and I've found myself preferring Roy to Jeff, which seems a bit heretical from what I've gathered. ELO were my favourite band when I didn't know about the rest. Now? Not so much.
I know a lot of this is personal preference, and some of it is very petty and I'm probably grasping at straws here. This is just my perspective on things. I don't expect anyone to agree with me. But I hope this helps clarify my secret a little?

Well I guess that explains it.
I've never been the kind of person who was really that into musicians' personal lives, unless they were really out there or there was something particularly unusual about their life that stood out. I'm really just into the music when it comes to bands, and everything else is just kind of secondary. I wouldn't know anything about the guys in ELO really aside, so I guess your secret makes sense if it comes to RPS
