(And if she's so ~obsessed with the nuclear family~, why is one of the main heroes gay...?)

You mean Dumbledore who was never acknowledged as a gay man in text and much less in a relationship with another man, and then died (without a family of his own, I might add)? Also, only one man out of how many characters?

Dude, he died when he was, like, 150. That wasn't really a case of Bury Your Gays. And he never had a real relationship/a family because of his own issues and flaws (i.e., the fact that he keeps too many secrets and doesn't trust other people properly and is afraid to be vulnerable because of his past, etc). Jo wasn't saying "GAYS DON'T DESERVE LOVE," she was saying "this heroic and brave and deeply flawed man made the choice to be alone because he blames himself for some pretty serious shit he did as a young man, and that may or may not have been the right choice." It wouldn't have made sense to acknowledge it in the book, since he kept his private life so suspiciously private (but, I mean, obviously it was there; that's why so many people were already shipping him & Gellert because she confirmed it). Besides, who says there aren't any other LGBT characters?! She mentioned Albus because someone asked directly; I'm quite sure there were more.

Oh come on. There might have been more queer characters, sure, in Jo's head, but if they didn't show up in the text, it doesn't count. The effect is the same as if there were none. Subtext (what little there was in HP) is nice, but it is not representation, and it's disingenuous and counterproductive to suggest otherwise.

So if a novel is set in, IDK, New York, and every character the reader sees is white, you're fine with that as long as the author says in an interview, "since someone asked about an important character B: B is black, I just never mentioned it in any way"? That, in your opinion, counts as writing a character of color into a setting where characters of colors should, according to Earth logic, be a part of population?

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-20 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually if she never mentions the races of any of the characters and it's in any way shocking to a reader when she says "by the way, character B is black", that says a lot more about the reader than it does the author. Why wouldn't character B be black?

Yes, because heterosexuality was not showcased at any point in the entire Harry Potter series. No sirry Bob.
