They're both good books. Why do we feel the need to compare?

Anansi Boys is amazing, what's wrong with you.

I have nothing to say about this secret other than it's beautiful.

what the fuck?

I post frequently in a gaming forum, where OP can also mean "overpowered" as referring to game mechanics, as well as "original poster". It can get kind of confusing at time.

NF!1 - It's okay. I'm fairly slow with internet shorthand, too. It's kind of ridiculous how long it took me to figure out what HBIC meant. I just google 'internet acronym [insert acronym here]' whenever I come across something I don't recognize now. It usually works.

NF!2 - What?

N!S, NF!1

N!S: I think they're both pretty good books, and I don't know where the comparison is coming from. It's not like they're even the same genre or written by the same author.

NF!1: Holy crap, I thought it meant Opener all along too. Learned something new today.

Oh man, I know what you mean. I still get confused when I see GDIAF or MTE. My brain just does not work in acronyms.

What are you even on about?

NF1

It's ok, it took me a while to realize SA and DA meant "same anon" and "different anon." I'd always thought thay meant "so agree" and "don't agree" because IA is "I agree." Internet acronyms can be confusing and everyone has some they got wrong. Also, the older you get the more you get wrong. It's just a fact of life. lol

urbandictionary.com helps a lot in this regard

oh, man, i love cat's cradle to death and i still don't fucking get why you're comparing it with anansi boys.

is this secretly some kind of "this book with black people and culture as a vital element is better than this book with black people and culture as a vital element"? 'cause, uh, if it is, you are totally going to have to make your point clearer than that. and even then i'd be all "DUDE, ICE-9 VS. GODS. THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE."

Re: N!S

(Anonymous) 2011-09-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
OP > I thought this was a secret because both books were written by Old White Guys, who act(ed) like it. And who, as you noted, wrote "books with black people and culture as a vital element." Neither is the most politically correct book to admit having read, these days. (For the barfing tweenager, I read Cat's Cradle all on my own, with no prompting from my school curriculum. So thanks for that cheerful note, and making me feel really old.)

Anansi Boys was just fresh air, man. It was a book fulla nothing. Not much plot, and the main character is basically walked through the book like a cardboard cutout, and d'you know I can't even remember much of it now. Not up to the usual, for Gaiman, for me. (The short stories tend to stay with me longer.)

Both authors are viewed by fandom as Very Bad Men these days (Gaiman, justifiably so given some of his remarks, and his fiancee, Vonnegut because he was about as right-winger as it gets, at the end.) So, liking the first book, or slagging the second book JUST because it was basically superficial and silly (and not Good Omens silly either), is guaranteed to rattle the kettle, either way.

I had to read Cat's Cradle for school. It made me throw up at the point where they opened the capsule.

Never read Anansi Boys. If it's worse than Cat's Cradle, I'll not fucking bother. :|
