SGA had an amazing ability to do almost everything wrong, but still to be that weird kind of addictive that means you can't stop watching.

Because the cast took the characters in far different directions than the writers ever planned or could conceive. Amazing cast, shitty writers made for a verrrrry strange show. You want to fic it because you want to fix it.

The strength of both SG-1 and SGA was the actors. On both shows, the writing was.... not strong. Characterization was practically non-existent. But the actors took the characters and made them their own, and made them actually interesting. The comedy on SG-1 comes from the actors, as does all the chemistry. The only reason John, Rodney, Teyla, and Ronon aren't all ridiculously boring cut-outs is the actors. Can you imagine those characters without those actors? John Sheppard would be a boring, somewhat stereotypical hero. Rodney you'd want to shoot (more than some people already do). Without the humor Rachel brought the role, Teyla would be even more of a stereotype than she already is, and Jason made Ronon seem like all he ever wanted to do was roll his eyes at everyone.

I think it's why SGU failed, honestly. Because TPTB thought the reason people loved the Stargates was because of their writing and storytelling talents. And that's about as far from the truth as you can possibly get.

Well, Rodney wouldn't exist on SGA without David Hewlett. They originally had a different character and David Hewlett came in to read, and they liked him, but they thought it was kind of stupid to give him a new part when Rodney McKay had already appeared in three SG-1 episodes.

So they wrote in Rodney.

I think they did okay for about the first 2 and half seasons. But I was able to stop watching, I stopped watching about halfway through season 4 because the writing got so bad even the best characters could not save it anymore.

Season 4 was my favorite season, and though Season 5 was pretty scattershot in its quality, I did like several eps, namely The Shrine, Vegas and Daedalus Variations.

I think the Shrine is one of the best episodes of the entire series. David Hewlett did phenomenal, and you get some of the best interactions between the characters of any episode of Stargate ever.
