I use Adblock, but for me this is a different thing. It's not that I want to block the domains entirely, and seeing the image at all completely pulls me out of the story. And if there's multiple images, it's honestly a whole lot easier for me to reload with image loading off than to go through, block every single image, and then start reading the damn fic.

OP, this is days late, but paranoia aside, the fact that images pull you out of fic has everything to do with how your brain is wired and what kind of learner you are. I'm totally the same way about it. Multimedia fics where the images add to the story and aren't just for show are almost impossible for me to get through. I usually have to blow the images up and force myself to read them and even then I frequently have to take breaks.

Lol, tried this once for an otherwise good story that was destroyed by a brain-meltingly hideous background pattern. Unfortunately, adblock took out the paragraph-dividers too and rendered the whole thing unreadable in an entirely new way.

For hideous background patterns, you briefly turn off CSS. In Firefox that's View-page style-no style. It's a godsend. Also helps with fic that inexplicably in a teeny-tiny box. To do it in Chrome it's a bit more complicated and involves add-ons (you can do it using Web Developer), but honestly, it's worth it.

You couldn't have just...right clicked the background image and blocked that image specifically? Because, um, it's possible to do that with adblocking programs.
