They might be kudosing it and then reading it because they are just so darn sure they'll like it, which is still bad but at least they are reading it

I'm not familiar with the site so I don't know if you can tell who is leaving kudos or not

You can tell if they have an account and are logged in. If you're not logged in, the kudos just comes up as "guest".

I know this feeling all too well.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate this feeling.

When I was afraid my friend was doing that I started sneaking in a reference or two to something we both liked, like MST3k. Then I would ask if they noticed the reference. And then they actually had to own up to not reading it.

Which is fine, really, it was just the lying that was really getting to me. WELL. Okay, I'm not gonna lie, it hurt my feelings that she didn't want to read my stuff anymore, but I really hated being ~placated.~

Writing friendships are so hard. :(

This. (not the OP, btw) I had a similar experience. This friend kept praising me for my fic just minutes after I upload another (long) chapter. After a while I got suspicious, and to make matters worse she was constantly harassing me about when the characters were going to sleep together...although I had no plans for that in the story. I once asked her about her thoughts on a major event that took place for most of a chapter, and she replied that she wasn't even aware that the event took place. Although the title even was a dead giveaway for the event (and this was after she told me that she read the chapter.) She eventually owned up that she just "skimmed" the chapter for any smut. And this was someone who claimed to be the fic's "biggest fan."

I know that she did read the first few chapters, but when she got into the "Nice, when will they shag?" stage, I was hurt. I know I shouldn't have been but come on: I am busting my ass trying to write a really good fic and all you want was a "insert slot A into slot B" scene that you can find in countless other fics. :\

also not op

your "friend" sounds like a dick, anon. really hoping you're not wasting more time on someone that dishonest.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeahh :/ I don't get caught up in any expectation that my friends will read my stuff, it just makes it really awkward when people are actually dishonest about it.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I have such mixed feelings about the Kudos thing. People can go on insincere fic praising rampages and we'd never know the difference.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What I hate even more (ok maybe not) than this is that these people must think I'm stupid if they don't think I'm going to notice there's no way they read that thing in 5 minutes.

OH SO YOU JUST INVENTED A FASTER METHOD OF SPEED-READING, HUH?

Jerks.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is kind of way I don't usually link IRL friends to my fic when they ask. I'd rather they read the first chapter and said "eh, not my thing", than tell me they'll read it, or they love it, but not actually care. But obviously they won't just tell me they stopped, and it gets awkward, and I can't ever ask them what they think.

I'd rather people just stumble upon my fic and read it 'cause they're interested, not because they owe me anything.

It's it really so hard to say something like "I'm sorry, I like you" (optional if you want to soften the blow: "and you write well") "but I don't feel interest in reading this this time and I wouldn't judge it/appreciate it properly."
