That's funny, I've never discovered any hatred towards it. It's mostly G3.5 that is hated(for a good reason).

SHOO BE DOO SHOO SHOO BE DOO

I mostly dislike G1 because I can never remember the pony characters. The villains were great, but main characters shouldn't be interchangeable.

But oh Christ, G3... hold me.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing against those generations but the art scares me.

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
When G3s first came out I found them freaky as all hell. Then after a year of so of bitching I was given one as a present...and it was downhill from there. (G1s still make the bulk of my collection though, of course.)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I love G1 because that is what I grew up with. I would even take my ponies to show and tell! I'm not into the new stuff simply because I don't like the new design...

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
mm, same. i hate the art design of the new series because i'm so used to the 80s/90s ponies. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the fandom hates G1?
Well, thanks for the warning, there goes my sliver of motivation to ever join it.
G1 forever!

No, no 'it' doesn't. What this secret misses is that people have different fucking tastes.

Up yours, haters, I have good memories of watching the 80s show on video at my nan's house. Of course, now that I'm 20 it's possible that it's actually terrible and I am just seeing it through the lightish-red goggles of nostalgia, but still.

Also hay FS did I tell you about this time like a month ago I found a shirt with Sundance on it in Primark it's like my fave t-shirt even though it's BRIGHT PINK. I am eagerly awaiting my first IRL encounter with a brony who does not know G1. The smackdown will be of EPIC proportions.

[identity profile] seishin.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*wants to tape that smackdown*

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get the insistence that FiM is not a girly show. It's about brightly colored talking cartoon ponies that solve their problems with friendship. The only way you could possibly make it girlier would be to cover everything an inch thick in hot pink glitter glue.

It is a girly show. It is also a good show. "Good" and "girly" have never been mutually exclusive concepts.
Your penis will not whither up and fall off if you admit to liking a cartoon about ponies, I promise.

[identity profile] cysfics.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I hear ya there. One of the reasons bronies annoy me so much is their badmouthing of the original series.

[identity profile] magusmanx.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally don't hate it. I didn't find it interesting as a kid. But I don't see why any one would hate it. Looking back, I remember I was disappointed because my ponies had more personality than those in the show. Eventually those VHS's ended up in the 'Gathering dust' pile.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Cartoon-wise, I never really bothered with any of them, but the toys are all adorable! With the exception of G3.5. I love G1, G2, G3 and G4 though, especially because I grew up with the middle two. :)

I think most bronies love G1 though, because Lauren Faust liked it.

[identity profile] disharmonia.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not in any way part of the Pony fandom, so forgive any ignorance. I watched the older show when I was younger and now have the DVDs, and have seen the new show, so that's all I'm basing my thoughts off of.

And with that disclaimer: wha???

Who could think the old show is girlier than the new one? The old show had fights and peril and epic adventures. Ponies got kidnapped. There were demons and gremlins and monster dragons and schmooze.

I watched the new show, and it's nice, but it's very....fluffy? It appears to mostly be about cute ponies doing cute pony things and learning cute life lessons. Of the two, the new show is FAR more stereotypically "girlie" -- or, at least, what I'd assume straight men consider girlie.

I think I'll get into the new show more if they introduce that element of peril. That's what I really loved about MLP when I was a kid. I didn't feel like it was talking down to me. There were real life or death situations presented in it, and as a kid, I felt really invested in that.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta agree. The old show used to scare me sometimes when I was little XD
I'd be happy with some more danger in FiM as well.

[identity profile] tasogare-n-hime.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, I watched the FiM pilot episodes after hearing all the hype and thought OK I could get into this. Then the rest of the episodes I tried to watch were... I don't even know. They were funny, and cute I'll give them that, but when I was a kid ponies went on adventures, and got in and out of actual danger. I really miss the days when little girls were allowed to go out and face the bad guy just as much as little boys were.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I love G1 (and G2!) so so much. I honestly find FiM really dull and unpleasant to watch (hence not bothering to watch more), but ohman do I still love those old MLP movies and the nostalgic enjoyment I can get out of it.

/sharing my opinion too!

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate the old show because it's 'girly'.

I hate it because it's fucking terrible.

[identity profile] hey-feygele.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, this. For a period of time I was trapped, trapped I say, watching it over and over again, and I sort of wanted to claw my eyes out. I think the only thing that stopped me is that one of the ponies has Bart Simpson's voice, which would crack me up.

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
I am guessing that people who don't love the original series are people who didn't grow up with it? I adore the G1 Sunbow produced series, hated Tales, and am not impressed by the G3 cartoons (though A Very Minty Christmas is quite cute).

The first cartoons were excellent, and anyone who says otherwise needs to watch Rescue at Midnight Castle (http://www.casttv.com/video/2o7x1fp/my-little-pony-rescue-at-midnight-castle-g1-pilot-video) pronto.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I really prefer the old pony look. Everything's all fierce and hard now. I miss the pastel cuddle-chub.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking it makes a huge difference if you're seen those first pilots or not. Even the MLP movie was way toned down compared to the pilot. The pilot was likely a bunch of writers that weren't being watched closely, were given the instructions to make a cartoon featuring some multi colored toys, and who went to epic doom filled fantasy town with it. And never again. It's amazing that it was made and it's a thing to behold.

The tv show after that was all right, but it didn't follow in the spirit of the pilot. It's understandable how someone would wonder what the appeal was if they only saw the tv show. And those ponies did have a babyish way of talking a lot of the time that is very off putting without nostalgia goggles.

I wish FIM had some more epic doom danger going on, but the story and character quality is much more consistent. And you have to love how Firefly was reborn as Rainbow Dash. Some of the danger they face was pretty epic, but it's blunted by the style it's drawn in and the humor. With the Midnight pilot, it was like a horror movie that was dropped into a kid's show.

How did I not see this secret before?

THANK YOU! Seriously, that kind of attitude is why I dislike the "brony" takeover of the MLP:FiM fandom.
