It only "sucks" to be mislabeled as gay if you're straight and you don't want the negatives that come along with actually being gay. That's an element of privilege.

By that logic, no gay person is ever bothered when they're called straight. They're getting the privileges, right? Why should they care otherwise?

As a matter of fact, a lot of queer people actually do allow others to perceive them as straight if it means protecting themselves. Passing privilege, it's a thing. But you're a fucking idiot if you think that's the only factor at play.

They're getting the priviledge of not being gay-bashed. People assume one is straight all the time by default, but assuming one is a lesbian because of their haircut is an accusation.

Since calling someone a lesbian comes with the bad baggage of being a non-straight I really doubt that people get upset over it simply because it sucks to be mislabelled. Not their fault, really, but let's not close our eyes to the obvious.
