It happens. Calling a woman lesbian is often used as an insult by sexist homophobes against women who aren't traditionally attractive or who venture outside gender norms. It gets used against female children all the time.

Yeah, that definitely happens. In fact it happened to me a lot in junior high, though I can't remember how long my hair was in those days.

I was thinking more of people seriously thinking someone is a lesbian just because of hair length, than of someone just being an insulting homophobe who knows nothing about lesbians anyway. If that makes any sense.

Actually, I think sometimes social environment must play some important part, at least when the mislabeling is done as an insult rather than a benign mistake. In my crappy junior high I had short hair and got called a lesbian and a boy all the time, then in my awesome high school I shaved half the hair off my head and don't recall being called a boy or a lesbian once.

I have short hair now and all anyone ever says is "You look better with short hair." But maybe at my age it's considered less of a radical decision to cut your hair short. (Apparently once you hit a certain age you are no longer allowed to wear your hair long, or something. Social rules are weird.)

The one I find funniest (as a woman squarely in that category) is when people call you a lesbian and then five minutes later go "Uuuuurgh, why were you hugging [insert male friend here], you fancy him, don't you?"

And I am (or was, because it doesn't happen much now everyone knows I have a girlfriend) just like "....You don't actually know what a lesbian is, do you?"
