Goofy is good. Goofy is fun. But having something that you pour something of yourself into being called goofy from someone who doesn't seem to respect that is a problem for me. And it doesn't seem like the OP is using "goofy" in the fun and giggles way.

Yeah, obviously if I'm going to spend a lot of my free time writing fan-fiction I take it seriously to some extent. Meaning, I take the work I do on it seriously (not so much the actual product). But I also recognize that's lots of it is rather silly, and still, goofy is one of the nicer things people say about fanfic.

A lot of it is really silly and fluffy. But some people (myself included) use it as a means to explore ideas and issues. If I want to write a fic where Captain America has to come to terms with the modern world's take on sexuality, I'm not thinking "hehe silly fic time!". So to have something I personally use to explore some pretty major issues called "goofy", yeah. It's hurtful.

"But some people (myself included) use it as a means to explore ideas and issues."

Um. No shit. Honestly, everyone writing anything ever basically since the dawn of time has been "exploring ideas and issues". By silly, I don't mean totally devoid of serious themes, I just mean, come on, there is something a little inherently silly about Captain America coming to terms with the modern world's take on sexuality. It's not a bad thing, it doesn't mean your writing isn't good and your ideas aren't worthwhile. It is just a funny hobby to have for some people, and a silly way to explore such issues (due in part, I would think, to the incongruity between the original canon material and the twist you take on it).

Like I said, it just helps to not take oneself so seriously.

Okay, let me rephrase. Calling something that can help someone deal with their own issues or something important to them silly is dismissive to me. Saying that exploring these things in this way is "silly" is dismissive to that exploration. I'm not saying anyone's writing the next great novel here but if someone sees something in a character and finds it easier to work through something THROUGH THAT CHARACTER, why is it silly?

As for the incongruity with canon... well, that's a whole other bag of representation worms that we should probably not get into here because... whoa. O_O

"Calling something that can help someone deal with their own issues or something important to them silly is dismissive to me."

I guess maybe we're just not going to agree on this point because I think it helps to just admit something can be seen as silly, and even if it is silly, it doesn't mean it can't be important to you, or help you deal with things, or do whatever you want it to do. Being something important to you and something silly are not mutually exclusive. I must sound like a broken record, but really, it's just healthier to take yourself with a grain of salt.

"As for the incongruity with canon... well, that's a whole other bag of representation worms that we should probably not get into here because... whoa. O_O"

Yeah probably not. Of course you can be silly while still being in perfect congruity with the canon, and the incongruity doesn't always make something sillier. I probably didn't need to include that bit.

[identity profile] dazzledfirestar.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree. I think, to me if I said that what I do is silly, that's fine. That's up to me to say one way or the other (and yes, some of it is very silly and I love it that way) but for someone else who uses silly in a dismissive way like that to say it... I don't know. That's not really their call to tell me what I should and should not find silly. But different strokes and all that. :)
