I think it's more that people tend to be ignorant and rather than educate themselves they choose to ignore it because the latter way of thinking is easier. At least ignore it until it becomes relevant to their own lives because there's no real motivation up until that point. Unfortunately when the subject comes up there are a lot of people who don't like to consciously admit they know nothing about the subject and end up saying stupid and/or hurtful things.
