I think it's more that they know what they are and when people read something so deeply personal incorrectly, it's hurtful. It's rather like someone insisting they know you better than you do.

I can definitely see where you're coming from, as this is a very easily misread topic, but I think it really would be insulting to anyone having their sexuality denied because of really trivial things.

Totally agree. I had a boss who frequently asked me if I was a lesbian, largely because I don't wear makeup, and because I talk about feminist issues. This continued for months despite my repeated assurances that I'm straight, and not wearing makeup has little to do with whether I like guys or girls. His last comment to me on the subject (I can't remember what prompted it): "Are you sure you're not gay? Because it's okay if you are - they're fun at parties!" To which I replied, "What? Yes, for fucks sake, I know who and what I am!"
