The fans who beat each other up after a soccer game don't play themselves. And I've seen plenty of amateurs ruin their health in the name of sports.

I think the one-in-a-million chance is also what makes people be serious about fanfic. Because some fanfic writers are gearing up to one day become published authors. So they do take their writing seriously. And to stay with the sports analogy, there are some amateurs who know they will never gain much money or fame, but still take their training seriously, which would be the equivalent of someone who doesn't want to get published, but still takes their fic seriously.

Thing is, as long as you aren't hurting anyone, I don't see why you should look down on people for taking anything that brings them fun and enjoyment seriously. And that's kind of what is getting people in this thread riled up - the OP and others are saying that they shouldn't take it seriously, which implies that it is not worth taking seriously. And that's just totally gauche.

I do look down on people who beat each other up after a game, is the thing. Hooliganism isn't anything worth defending, neither is fucking up your health. So basically what we're getting from this is: amateurs don't usually take sports seriously, but when they do... it is a bad thing. If writing fanfiction ever got to that point... well, I guess some of the wank in fandom does have shades of this.

That said, I am all for being passionate about fanfiction. It's one of my favorite hobbies, and it's damn fun, so why not? I think the OP's word choice is the problem - I just don't read as many negative connotations into "goofy" as others, I guess. And let's remember that the secret is talking about a very specific kind of "seriousness" here: the stuff the AO3 (or OTW) people put in their mission statement, which can be slightly discomfiting to read, no lies.
