Kyubey... Not to spoil too much, but I'm not sure you'll still be enamored with him by the end of the series. He is still gosh-darn CUTE when everything's said and done, though.

Glad you're enjoying it, anon! I know there's a lot of hype aversion/backlash around it but it's a very enjoyable series.

Yay! It's nice to see a secret about how someone ended up liking something despite being hesitant to watch/read/etc. it originally, instead of the opposite.

I totally loved that show! It was a nice surprise. Though in my case, it wasn't so much a hype aversion thing as it was... Well, I just don't usually watch things that look so cute and pastel-like, even when said things have a dark subtext to them. But I loved the show and came to love the look of it. (Especially the labyrinth sequences!)

'S always good to give a show a chance! As much as hype can be a total killer for a series, sometimes it really is worth it, and you can normally tell within a few episodes if a show is for you or not, to be fair.

Madoka really is excellent. ♥

I've been beyond hesitant to watch this because, well, it looks so cutesy. The only magickawaii!anime I've ever liked was Sailor Moon and Sugar Sugar Rune. I've heard that it's good, but I can't bring myself to watch it.

Maybe I should, though.

The cutesy style is part of the charm for me because of how well it contrasts with the tone of the series. But to each their own! Stick with it through episode 3 if you decide to give it a try.

Looking cutsey is about as cutsey as it gets. It ends up being rather dark.

Give it 5 episodes, see how you feel.

I was hesitant cus of the hype as well (even though I DO like cutesy stuff) and I didn't regret it at all.

The look is... Deceptive. They pulled it off really well, too! And the pastel tones really grew on me. I love the look of the show now!

The cuteness of Madoka Magica was done on purpose, to be deceptive. The staff even apologised later for deliberately trying to give the impression that it was going to be an ordinary fluffy cute magical girl series when it's actually very dark in tone. They wanted it to be a surprise, you see.

The manga of Sugar Sugar Rune is awesome *.*

I LOVED the series when I first watched it, but it's somehow soured since then. Seeing all the main characters be ridiculously over-fetishized in the licensed merch just finally beat it into my head that the show is made for perverted men. It's not about female empowerment. It's about underage girls in sexy/cute clothes.

It's kind of like the pie in The Help: yeah, it's delicious, but it has feces in it, and once you know you're going to want to puke it up.

it doesn't help that gen urobochi proved himself to be a lolicon on twitter

It's true, a lot of the merchandise is very skeevy and fetishised indeed. Personally, although I'm aware of the merchandise being that way, it doesn't affect my own enjoyment of the show, since the show itself thankfully isn't the same way. It certainly looks from the merchandise as if the creators of the series expect the fans to be creepy men, and I know they're not exactly angels themselves either, but the series can stand on its own. Though I can definitely see how seeing the merch could sour you on it.

A lot of series in Japan have creep merchandise which doesn't reflect the content of the programmes they're based on. (Such as: for Umineko, which is really not anything like a moe fetish series at all, it's possible to buy full body pillows of a few characters, and the special editions of the anime DVDs have cover art with the female characters in v. dubious poses on beds.)

how is this show not about female empowerment? madoka was basically runnin' the world at the end of it. just because they looked cute/sexy doesn't make them any less strong or wonderful as characters. the show itself is not perverted at all, did we watch the same one, i mean

aw i'm glad you gave it a try, anon. it's certainly not for everyone, but it's a beautiful show and i hope you enjoy the rest of it should you continue watching.

p.s. i love kyubey too, if only for how interesting i think he is
