I always thought it was more of the Doctor acknowledging that Amy's grown up into a real adult. All along, he's thought of her as a little girl who he broke a promise to, and has acted as he would've towards her as he would've if he had been able to take her with him then. That's why he's so freaked out by her being a kissogram in the first episode, that's part of his problem with Rory, and that's why they had to have the revelation in The God Complex.

By calling her "Amy Williams" he's leaving behind "Amelia Pond". She's not a little girl who looks up to him any more, now she's an adult woman with a husband and her own mind.

That's how I viewed it anyway.

This was pretty much how I looked at it, too - not insisting she's still that little girl anymore. Didn't he refer to her as "Amy Pond" again later in the episode, too? (I could be misremembering it, I suppose, but yeah.)

I actually really agree with this- and it's more how I saw it. ^^;

To me it was less "The Doctor erasing Amelia Pond" and more about the Doctor giving back her childhood he stole, but also acknowledging that she was no longer that child.

This, basically.

Not to mention he called her "Glorious Pond" (;_;) barely a moment beforehand.

I think the issue is that up until that moment it had been established in canon (even in the Doctor Who magazine) that Rory had taken Amy's lastname instead of vice versa, so that moment was really irritating in what it represented about the assumption that a woman has to take a man's lastname (or his identity).

DOCTOR:
(plants a finger on AMY’S puckered lips) Amelia! From now on, I shall be leaving the... kissing duties to the brand new Mr. Pond. (shakes RORY’S hand)

RORY:
No, I'm not Mr. Pond. That's not how it works.

I always read his acceptance ("yeah, it is") as reluctant acceptance that it doesn't matter that he doesn't want to be called "Mr. Pond," they're going to call him that anyway.

I don't read DWM, so I can't speak to that.

In the last name department, neither Amy nor Rory get to choose their identities. However, it is interesting to me that Amy gives the last name "Pond" to their daughter. Her line (and I'm paraphrasing here because I can't find the exact quote), "Melody Williams is a librarian. Melody Pond is a superhero," is quite telling. I think at this point she may see herself as a bit of a superhero as well. That dovetails nicely with the Doctor's speech in "The God Complex" where he calls her "Amy Williams" and she loses her faith in him.

I still see problems with the concept, but it's such a small problem when compared to the other issues I have with season 6.

I get that quote, but IDK, it felt like another one of those "we're not your poncho boys, oh yes we are" moments rather than Rory being forced into the last name thing.

I assumed they were using their original lastnames until I saw the profiles where Rory was Rory Pond and then got delighted that they'd switched it up for once.

I still see problems with the concept, but it's such a small problem when compared to the other issues I have with season 6.

I think for me, I was just so utterly disappointed, because that goodbye was one of the few things that didn't bother me about season 6 and that line ruined it.

I have a few problems with the idea of conflating taking your husband's identity with taking an adult identity -- such as the idea that it was "childish" of her to continue going by Pond after having married. Not to mention the fact that Amy Pond was the adult identity she chose for herself in "The Eleventh Hour" and implicitly the name she wanted to continue to go by (given that Pond is the name she gave her daughter).

This, seriously. Amy calls herself Amy Pond and identifies as such. Saying or implying that she has to become Amy Williams when she "grows up" is bullshit. But then, Moffat + Sexism = Moffat's own bff, sooo.

I agree that Moffat has said some unfortunate things about women occasionally, but equally he's said stuff a lot about how women shouldn't take on their husbands name. So I always took that line as to remind her that she had a husband and should start that life, and that 'new adventure'. After all, he calls her Pond in the next two episodes.

But she was already living her married life with her husband.

I agree that this was meant to be the point, but 'Amy Williams' still has unfortunate implications. They may not have been intended, but that doesn't make them go away.

I don't disagree with this interpretation - I think this is how the scene was intended.

It doesn't bode well for the Doctor believing she has her own mind, if he feels the right way to express this is by designating her the property of her husband, however. That didn't seem very Doctorish to me.
