Modern Family is so stupid. I saw an episode for the first time the other day and I was smh at the characterizations and "humor" of it. Ha ha ha, ~the sexy, but crazy Latina~. Ugh. I really couldn't with the hispanic/gay stereotypes. So much for "modern".

Yeah, pretty much. I was so excited when I first heard about the series and then it failed. It continues to fail over and over and over…

The hispanic jokes are way too mean spirited when compared to the light-hearted humor the rest of the show has IMO. Like when Manny wanted to go golfing with Jay and he shrugged and said that it was okay since a latino was going to carry his club either way.

You know, I've completely given up how to word this but: Gloria is so much more than the sexy but crazy Latina, and Mitch and Cam go at least a little way in subverting gay stereotypes.

The previews may play up the other stuff, but the show itself has been pretty consistent in demonstrating just how smart, loving, and awesome Gloria is, and she's an amazing mother; Cam loves (and played) football and was a professional clown, and Mitchell in many respects is pretty uptight and reserved, none of which I would consider fitting "gay" stereotypes.

The show is not perfect; I'm not going to argue that it is. But most of the problems I've had with it have been (like what's mentioned in this secret) about the depiction of the "traditional" family.

Thiiiiis. I love this show, and while it isn't the best groundbreaking depiction of different cultures/life styles, it's still MILES better than the usual stuff on tv.

My problems too also tend to stem from the most 'normal' and 'traditional' of the three families, funny huh?

No. But being Hispanic myself, I know since many of my female relatives behave similar to her. Same with some of my Hispanic female friends.

I personally love Gloria. I think she is a wonderful mother and wife.

And so what? I have friends that are similar to Cam and Mitchell. Maybe they exaggerated the characters, but who are you to say people like that do not exist?

It'd be nice to get some different kinds of depictions of Latinas on tv/film, though. It's always the same stereotypes. They even made Sofia darken her hair so she would look "more Latina" (Gawd, I can't even).
