And now this is making me wonder if it's possible (or maybe even probable) to have different gender preferences for different quadrants.

Assuming there are gender preferences for all four quadrants, that would make 162 different combinations of preferences. 324 if being the pacifier or the pacified of an auspisticeship counts as a preference.
It's just as well Alternian society never became free enough for sexual identity to be a talking point. The vocabulary would be atrocious.

Kind of reminds me of that one conversation Feferi had with Eridan. I've seen people complain that her excitement over him possibly being red for a guy looks like a yaoi fangirl in a species that is supposed to at large not even care about gender in their relationship preferences, but when I read that I thought she was trying to get Eridan to admit red feelings for Karkat...

like they just established that Eridan has a female for one of his sexual quadrants, so she mentions perhaps that he might have red feelings for another female as if that may be something he'd be more inclined to do as he does not yet have any quadrants filled with a guy. But then it would be super --Exciting!! if he were red for that particular guy he talks about his feelings to instead of his wond-erful moirail. 38D

...I think I may be moving off my point with that. I'm trying to say that, from that conversation my impression is that, different gender preferences may be more common than people would think from a bisexual race. It isn't important enough/too complicated to give names to it like hetero/homo sexual, but having different preferences for your quadrants may be something that varies between individual trolls.

It's not entirely invalid. consider how he reacted when he thought Karkat was hitting on him.

Though lets face it, Eridan would have taken any relationship with anybody. He was a sad, desperate hipster. But the key there is he was in fact ready to take ANYONE. Gender irrelevant.
