I'd have preferred it if Buffy had actually raped Spike instead. It would have still shown the depth of the twisted nature of the relationship, and also highlighted that men can also be rape victims. However, AFAICT most of the fandom does know how twisted the relationship was, and how stupid both Buffy and Spike were, playing those kind of games without a safeword, or fully discussing either partner's preferences and desires could only end in rape. From the moment it started it was a case of if and who, not when.

The trouble is there is a specific subset of people in fandom that refuse to accept there is equal responsibility on both sides, and seek solely to vilify Spike for it. They get huffy and and screamy if it's explained to them, because life can't be full of shades of grey and must be simple black and white.

Except... no one ever acknowledges the fact that men can be rape victims. If a man rapes a man, it's still a badGUY doing it, and the man who's just been raped "should have fought back harder." If a woman rapes a man, well...NOPE, "that absolutely can't be considered rape, because women are ~Incapable~ of raping men." Male rape victims are treated as though they don't exist. Both IRL and in fandom.

You would like Criminal Minds, anon. There are two rape victims on the team, and not only are they both men, they are the two alpha males. I love my show -- with the exception of Season 6 (which we may end up pretending never happened) it makes its bacon turning stereotypes on their heads.

Who are the two? I know Morgan was at least molested, and maybe raped, I admit to only just coming into the show about that time, but is the other one something new?

I know there's kind of a divide between fandom people who think Hotch was raped during all the stabbity time with C. Thomas Howell, but there's PLENTY of room to interpret that differently. But I didn't watch this most recent season...did something else happen?

In an interview just after the "stabbity time" (never in a comment has my Foyet icon been more appropriate) Ed Bernero said in legalese that the network had made him tone down a recent plotline into ambiguity and he was trying to make his intentions explicit in a later episode but might not win. So. Yes. Given the framework of the show and Foyet's previously-stated pathology, Eddie's headcanon was rape and the evidence in the show was pretty damn conclusive to anyone paying attention (which, granted, there is a sizeable contingent in fandom that only watches for the Estrogen Brigade Bait, so what are you to do?).

She did, but obviously it's not as important as the fact that Spike attempted to rape her. Why, a woman raping a man is simply hilarious! There's no reason to treat it seriously and as a rape instead of an easily forgotten surprise!sex.

This so much. I hate when people point to Spike's attempted rape and ignore her actual rape of him. They were both so fucked up in season 6. Both were equally horrible. I admit I do ship, but I do so in the sense that I liked fucked up and that I think there is a chance they could have made something healthy work in the future. Their season 6 relationship was in no way healthy, though.
