It's not a democracy, the guy doesn't have to win elections every four years.

No, he actually has it must worse. He can't even guarantee himself four years of power.

But that's not the condition everyone is under right now. The present iteration of the game of thrones isn't "who'd make a better administrator during peacetime" - it's who can win peace for the realm through war, and secure the throne for themselves. If he can't rally support and keep it, he's not the best ruler right now. He's a terrible ruler.

But hey he'd definitely do better than Daenerys in Meereen, it's true.

I wasn't talking about whether Stannis is the best player in the game of thrones, or whether he's likely to win the war. I'm talking about a good ruler as in someone who is good at RULING the realm, which is not what Stannis is doing at the time. He is in no position to rule the realm, so how can he be accused of doing a bad job at it? That'd be like saying that Daenerys right now is bad at ruling Westeros because she's not there, it makes no sense.
That doesn't mean that if he were to win the war he would be bad at ruling, which is what many people accuse him of. But as far as contenders for the throne go, I think Stannis is the only one who would be a good long-term ruler - not just someone who would manage to gather armies and kill every other contender, but someone who could rule well after winning the throne instead of ruining the realm. Not Daenerys, not any of the Lannisters now that Tywin is dead, for the moment none of the Starks either, and while I love the Greyjoys they're no rulers. So I don't really see a better option.
