The thing to me is that Stannis is waaaaay better suited as a behind-the-scenes man rather than being a King (and I say this even though he's one of my favs in the series). A good ruler has to have the proper mixture of charisma and intelligence, and Stannis just doesn't fit the bill (although I don't know if any of the candidates right now do either tbh). In a modern society, I could see him being a high-raking official like a Court Justice or General, but never as the face of an actual ruling party. He needs someone charismatic. Renly would have been a great someone but... lmfao we know how that ended, so I just don't see him being a great king. He'd be a competent king maybe, but not someone particularly memorable. Or he'd be like Thomas Jefferson.

People really tend to oversimplify the poor guy though.

I never said that Stannis is the perfect king, because he wouldn't be. He would have made a perfect Hand for Robert if Robert had actually let him rule. But right now Stannis isn't in a situation where he could be the man behind the scenes, he has no choice but to be the leader himself. It's not ideal for someone with his personality, but there is no such thing as a perfect king. And I think the uncharismatic guy who makes unpleasant, but right decisions is a better ruler than the pretty, charming guy (or girl) who is liked by everyone, but sucks at ruling. I thought Robert was proof enough of that.
That being said, I agree with you, Stannis would do well with someone charismatic by his side to smooth out his rough personality. He'd need a different queen than Selyse, who's even worse personality-wise than Stannis. cough, Sansa, cough

I think I agree with you pretty much on all points here, though I think that it says something about your selection when STANNIS is the best ruler Westeros has. Although, having someone like Davos as Hand does help him. (Also word to your point on being Robert's hand. But Robert is a life-ruiner who ruins everything for everyone, albeit indirectly)

Selyse is the WORST. Her and Axel(l?) Florent need to diaf somewhere. I remember someone saying that they couldn't' respect Stannis because he "cheated" on her, but it's pretty clear that she's probably a-ok with it and probably wants to get with Mel more than Stannis ever did...Sansa oh lord the awkward would be unimaginable. I ship Stannis/JUSTICE and Sansa/no men ever too much for that.

You know, selection or not, I think Westeros could do with a bit of Stannis' moral unflexibility. And Davos as his Hand would definitely help a lot. (Don't get me started on Robert.I feel way too sorry for him to hate him, but he fucked up so many people, and nobody more so than Stannis.)

Selyse is horrible. Gods, she and Melisandre can go die in a fire together, they'd probably enjoy it.
Haha, I ship Stannis with Justice and Order and The Law, and with Jon, and with Davos, and I ship him with Sansa as my ultimate royal couple like someone is paying me for it. ;) Of course it would be utterly awkward at first, but that's what makes it interesting. I'd love to see how they'd deal with it, and tbh I think it would actually work out alright.

Westeros could definitely do with a stronger moral compass, but Stannis would need to someone to keep him in check, so I'm grateful he'd have Davos for that. I find it funny that despite how outwardly different Robert and Stannis are, they both found people who are pretty similar to one another to be their Bffles. (I can only feel sorry for him to an extent. Yeah, the whole Lyanna thing sucked, but that's no excuse for raping your wife, treating your brothers like shit and generally being an all-around hideous person. I don't know if he effed up Stannis or Cersei more, but I think both of them would be much better off if he showed them the slightest bit of human decency.)

Melisandre's been growing on me ever so slightly (mainly because I get the feeling she's going to join team Snow any day now), but if they make her and Stannis into some epic love story for the show, I'm going to flip a table.

Fortunately for Westeros, Stannis listens to Davos more than Robert ever listened to Ned. And Davos is somewhat more practical and less naive than Ned, fortunately. ;)
Cersei was already fairly fucked up before she ever met Robert, but Stannis had to deal with Robert since he was born. But I agree, they both would have been so much better off without Robert.

I don't actually hate Melisandre as a character, I'd probably be cool with her if she wasn't around Stannis. I just feel incredibly protective over him, and she worries me. Team Snow and Team Stannis should totally be the same thing, btw. They're the best together.

THIS, so much. For me Stannis/Melisandre always felt like such incredible dub/non-con to me. If they turn it into anything less ambiguous than the books, I will just be mad.

Davos is just the best person ever. He's probably my favourite character in the books partially because unlike Ned, he actually UNDERSTANDS the consequences of his actions and doesn't soften his words for Stannis, even though he obviously cares about him. Also, he's one of the few genuinely good guys, and while I know a lot of people don't agree, I find his POV's fascinating and insightful.

Oh, I also totally understand that. Mel keeps trying to force the prophecy with him, when it's pretty obvious he's just not the one. And on top of that, I think the whole "lulz you're a messiah" thing really messes him up more, since it plays so directly into his inferiority complex.

And Jon and Stannis, they're epic together. I've always loved the both of them, so seeing them together just made it all the more awesome. Though NGL, I think that Jon would be better suited to the whole AA reborn role (not necessarily being king though), and Stannis would make a much better Lord Commander. In my ideal world, Martin would actually pull that switch and keep them both alive, but all I see is inevitable tragedy in Stannis' future. :(

Seriously. It's pretty obvious that a) Stannis doesn't like sex at all and b) their relationship is extremely twisted and complicated. However, I do have faith in HBO considering their adaption so far, even if we're treated to a shadow baby making scene.

Sometimes I feel like Stannis&Davos are what Robert&Ned SHOULD have been like - but at the same time we see the cost that friendship has for Davos, who barely gets to spend time with his family, while Ned actually had a life away from Robert. Ned and Davos both couldn't have their family AND their BFF. I also adore Davos' POV, they're just beautiful. I don't understand why people think they're boring, but then again I like them mostly because I love to see Stannis.

I love how Stannis actually doesn't seem to care much about the whole messiah business. I think not getting the throne that's his by rights messes him up WAY more. The whole messiah thing ... it seems to be an inconvenience for Stannis. That's what I love about him. Other people would go crazy with delusions of grandeur. Stannis is ANNOYED. So much love. <3

I always found Jon utterly boring until he became Lord Commander, but LC!Jon is one of my favourite characters (still find him boring when I go back to read his chapters in the earlier books). He and Stannis have so much in common, they make perfect allies and could even become friends, to a certain extent.
I don't see Stannis as LC, ever. First of all, he wouldn't ever take the black. Ever. Second, even if he did, the LC is elected, and people don't like Stannis. The guy has no way of becoming LC. ;) I dislike Jon as AA because it's cliché (just like that shitty R+L=J theory), and also because Jon belongs on the Wall. Jon/Wall forever. And if the Wall were to fall down ... I'd want Jon on Stannis' Kingsguard. From black to white. ^^
I hope AA will either be someone totally unexpected, i.e. neither Jon nor Daenerys. Stannis would be epic because nobody expects that anymore. Victarion would be even better because I'd love to see an AA who's not a good guy as such. But I generally have so many hopes for Victarion.

Stannis just isn't the kind of man to have sex for fun. With a different wife, he might have learnt to like sex as part of his marriage, but he'd never just sleep with someone because he wants to. I really hope we won't get a Stannis/Melisandre sex scene because I don't see how they can NOT fuck that up, unless they make it properly non-con. Also, I love that the books are hinting strongly that Stannis didn't know Melisandre killed Renly, so I'd hate for the show to change that.

That's what's really tragic for Davos. Part of him really obviously justs wants to go hone and be with what's left of his family, but his obligation to Stannis prevents him from doing so. I often wonder what Marya thinks of the whole situation, and if she ever misses when her husband was just the most notorious smuggler in all of Westeros. At the same time too though, I do think Davos wouldn't really want it any other way.

I think that while he doesn't really fully buy into the whole idea, especially since he he pretty much TELLS Davos he's an atheist, or the closest thing Westeros has to one, there's something appealing for him about the idea he's destined to save the country, and getting the recognition and/or love from the people. He'd never admit that EVER, but I do think it's buried down there under layers upon layers of repression. His eternal :| face about life just makes him so endearing to me.

See, I think under the right circumstances, he could very well become LC. If Dany/Aegon/Hodor showed up or whatnot, it could be a viable option for him, other than death. It's not really something I think will happen, but I feel like it's a good place for his character. Endless DUTY, OBLIGATION, and NO SEX EVER. :P Also, I think that if Jon IS AA reborn (and R + L = J, which I like because it explains everything, especially about Lyanna's "promise" even if it's not the most original), it's going to go how people expect it to. Jon's probably NOT going to be ruler and I think if he were offered the crown, he'd decline it and go back to wall!remains. My secret crackpot!hope for AA reborn though is Davos. There would have been some hints (Smoke and Salt = Blackwater), but it'd just shock the world and be a completely troll move on Martin's behalf. I'm going to admit, I kinda just skimmed the Greyjoy chapters, but I'm startig to feel like maybe I should go back and read them closer.

Completely agreed. Stannis comes across to me as so repressed that he's functionally asexual and his relationship with Melisandre had always been strange to me for that reason. Heck, the only people we ever see him smiling at are Davos and Jon. But, it's HBO, so I think a sex scene is unavoidable, unfortunately. :( But they've GOT to do something to convey the creepiness/ambiguity/something. Otherwise, it'll just be a clusterfuck and audiences will be left... really wondering about stuff. But again, I have faith in HBO, and after checking out a few things Dillane's been in, I'm really looking forward to his performance.

I'm fairly sure Davos wasn't home more often when he was still smuggling, so she's probably used to it. Doesn't mean she likes it, of course.

I suppose part of him does like the idea of being special and destined to save Westeros, but I also think that he has trouble believing it. He doesn't care much about gods, and he's not the kind of man to believe in prophecies and fate. A little part of him wants to believe, but I think it'd take much more evidence for him to accept the idea as something that's really true beyond doubt.

Hodor for King! I don't think Stannis would take the black even if Daenerys or Aegon showed up. Stannis is not the kind of guy to say, "oh, right, there's some random inexperienced little kid who's a Targaryen heir, sure, just take the throne and Imma gonna stay at the Wall." He'll fight til death. And even IF he would accept one of them as king/queen (which I don't see him doing, ever), he'd still be the rightful Lord of Storm's End and would have no reason to take the black.
Davos as AA would be epic. Victarion would just amuse me. I didn't like the Greyjoy chapters in AFFC, but ADWD made me fall in love with Victarion's madness. ^^ Although I don't really care much about the whole AA thing, I just hope that Daenerys will be the Big Bad, it would be such an epic plot twist.

They've fucked up some other things, as great as the show was overall. I'd be so disappointed if the ONE thing they fuck up in season 2 would be Stannis/Melisandre. :/
