"Amelia Pond" is more of a symbol for the Doctor. It's more HIM letting go of his image of her as an innocent little girl, rather than him saying "You're Amy Williams now, go be oppressed by your husband."

As SOON as I heard it, I thought 'Oh dear God, all the sexual oppression police are going to come out of the woodwork on that, can't anyone realize it's symbolic and not literal????'.

Intent doesn't matter. The implication's still there.

There was other ways to address her adult self like Mrs. Amy Pond, which she is. Her name is not Williams in any way.

Forgive people feeling slighted that one of the rare occasions that a guy takes up a girl's surname in a society that would call him completely pussywhooped and not a man for it all of a sudden is implicated that to address her as an adult, you have to address her with her husband's surname she never took after.

But she isn't Amy Williams now. There's no canon evidence she chose to change her name.

Certainly it's symbolic, and I understand the purpose of the scene, but there's an added (I'm prepared to accept it may have been accidental) symbolism which to my mind is slightly disturbing - this is primarily a series for children, some of whom are now going to think that the proper grown-up thing to do for a married woman is to take her husband's name. It doesn't matter whether this added layer was intended. It's there, the result of an ingrained acceptance of some unfortunate social conventions. And yes, it bothers me that 'Williams' would even be on the cards as her 'real' surname.

And you would be right. But then these are the same people who would rather let Donna die a horrible, painful death than have the Doctor take her memories to save her. Even so much as calling it "mind rape." (Yeah, as if the Doctor is just going to walk away and let one of his best friends die in agony. Do they even know the Doctor?)

Yeah. Except Russell T Davies didn't have to contrive the "death vs complete removal of agency" dilemma in the first place. He deliberately contrived a narrative in which Donna ended up with no memories, completely divested of agency. For him as a writer it wasn't actually a choice between that and killing her off -- so to characterise people who have an issue with the ending to her story as "preferring to let Donna die a horrible, painful death" when that's a false dichotomy entire contrived by Russell T Davies himself is pretty disingenuous. I'm sure that what most people actually would have wanted for Donna is an ending which serviced her as a character, i.e. something like her choosing to leave the Tardis for her own reasons.
