I remember watching that episode because I was trying to see why my sister was in love with the show. Turns out I don't find the show funny at all and so forced.

That said, when that scene popped up, I said to myself, "Golly gee, this show is cliche and boring. I also bet someone on F!S or tumblr is going to write about this kiss too."

Not that this episode is distinctly different in tone or humor style from the rest of the series, but it's virtually always a mistake to just watch a random episode of a show to try and understand the appeal. You virtually always choose the episode where even the fans don't like it, or one that is so dependent on seeing prior episodes that you don't get it. Always ask for recommendations first.

For Modern Family, the episodes that come to my mind are: Fizbo, Run for Your Wife, and Travels with Scout.

Also, there's a level of needing to care about the characters that you are watching, and a random episode from the beginning of a season is probably not going to do that.

If it was a pilot episode, or a new series that has yet to find its ground, or even a series that relies on the viewer having watched past episodes, I'd normally agree with you.

But it's none of those. I know I'm not going to be engaged by it, so I'm not going to go out of my way to chore through more of it. Sitcoms involving character actors aren't very interesting to me is all.
