Ooh, is that Mark Strong?

[identity profile] generalstolas.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

[identity profile] lovemoony4ever.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? That was my main impression from the movie too. I enjoyed parts of it, true, but I spent most of it bored out of my mind. Shipping them passed the time;)

[identity profile] scornedsaint.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
If the writers had actually done a decent job with the adaptation, you would have been right.

[identity profile] generalstolas.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
That was my impression of the book, tbh.

[identity profile] loony-daydreams.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I remember being the only person in a group discussion of the film who actually liked it and ended up trying to defend it to the others. Of course, I couldn't state this exact secret as the reason why I liked it so much, so just ended up blathering on about camera angles and perspective.

Fuck that, it was all about those two.

Is the remake out yet? I'm dying to see it!

In the book, it's totally a tragic love story.

Spoilers ahoy!

[identity profile] nopejustme.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well; it sort of was one.
They were implied to be homosexuals anyway. Which is one of the reasons he killed him.
And it's historically accurate, as a high percentage of male spies in that time were apparently gay.
So. Enjoy!

Mhmm! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Wolfenden)

[identity profile] joyciel.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
What? Is it out already? So it's not that good?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's out in the UK and is a fantastic film. I've not met anyone who didn't love it.

And yes, it is partly a doomed love story and I thought it portrayed that really well. It's also a fascinating spy thriller and a tale of the loneliness of boys-only 'clubs'.

[identity profile] pendingprogress.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's, er, very...atmospheric.

Unfortunately, they sort of forgot to put any story in until about halfway through.

I think in general it's a good film, worth a watch, but you have to start it very awake, and it's not one I'd desire to see again. Like, I'd watch it if someone wanted me to do so with them, but I'd never just actively put it on myself.

If you don't mind spoilers I have a long rambly post on my journal about all my thoughts directly after seeing it.

FFFFFFFUUUU I WANT TO SEE THIS SO BAD BUT IT'S NOT OUT HERE YET AND I WANT TO READ THE BOOK BUT THE POST OFFICE KEEPS COCKBLOCKING ME [/csb]

Mark Strong's beautiful sad eyes get me every time.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Haha there is a scene where he's supposed to be all heartbroken and yelling at a schoolboy and all I could think was "Mark Strong has beautiful shoulders, what is up with that".

[identity profile] crackitycrackho.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This was basically the first thing my friend and I said to eachother while we were walking out of the theatre after the movie. The way Mark Strong's character gazed at Colin? Shamon now.

AMAZING movie, by the way.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I think that was the element that'll stay with me from seeing it. Hell, I saw it on a date, and the guy I was with commented on that immediately afterwards, so it's not even the product of slash-goggles.

I blame Mark Strong - he did a really beautiful job, and has epic sad eyes. (Even if I spent the first few minutes frowning at the screen like 'is that the guy who played Guern in The Eagle?!')

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A+ for understanding the film, here's a medal

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, have you read the book? You weren't doing it wrong.
