MoR!Harry has good ideas (except when he doesn't and next thing he knows he is breaking into Azkaban and fucking with the time-continuum). I can see why emulating him would work out in the academic field.

I hate that fic and others like it so much. It comes across as smug. It seems the whole point of the fic is to criticize the Harry Potter world from this really arrogant, pseudo-intellectual point of view that was just grating. If you don't like Harry Potter, why would you write Potter fanfiction? I just don't get it, and I don't get this whole genre of Potter fanfics that seem written only to criticize the thing they are writing this fanfic about.

Because I don't think the viewpoint of this fic or the character is anything to emulate.

The author, by his own admission (I read it in his website, but I would have to comb it to find the exact page again), wrote the fic to get feedback to get inspired enough to continue his original (that is, non-fandom) work and chose Harry Potter specifically because the fandom has such a huge readership.

And that is even more of a dick move. Now I even more don't get why that fic is so popular.

1. Most readers don't read the author's opinions because they:

a) Don't visit his website, where he writes more about his opinions.

b) The author erases his author's notes every time he uploads a new chapter so many people don't get to see his real attitude.

c) Most readers only praise him and don't give him detailed criticism, so if you check the reviews section, you won't find many negative reviews, giving the fic a better reputation. You'd have to visit many different website to see a more varied opinion of him.

d) he accepts anonymous reviews, which allows people to review more than once per chapter, and also tends to attract lazier reviewers in general, so many of his reviews consist of short "update more plz" and "this is so cool, plz". If it was just constructive reviews, his review count would drop significantly.

2. The fic actually isn't that bad; he writes certain things very well, like the crazy schemes Harry comes up with, battle and action scenes, and he writes the friendship Harry has with Voldemort, Draco and Hermione in different ways than you usually see in fiction. He also has a flair for the epic and over the top, and that is well-liked in fandom.

3. His update schedule was initially faster, gaining a quicker following.

4. The folks at TV Tropes, a huge website and a significant hype machine, like his fic a lot for his interesting use and manipulation of the expected tropes in fanfiction; he is good at keeping you guessing where he is going, which is something the user at TV Tropes like.

It's also the most colossal self-insert I have ever, ever encountered. My second-hand embarrassment for the author was so bad after just a few chapters I couldn't have continued even if I wanted to.
