I love the Photoshopped beard-Snape. I wouldn't particularly say he looks hot, but I would have preferred the look for the character. It would suit the general 'unkempt and unwashed' description from the books.

I am forever dissatisfied with the casting of Alan Rickman as Snape because dude is way too goodlooking and heavyset. He really needs to be more thinnish and swoop in like a bat. And have a (greasy) beard.

Also, they're just in the American version (that I know of), so not all readers had those affecting their view of the characters.

The first time I ever read Harry Potter, my little sister was watching Robin Hood (the one with Costner's out-of-place American accent...) in the other room and I totally pictured Snape as the Sheriff of Nottingham. When I found out Rickman WAS actually going to play him, I was psyched, but I was surprised to see he didn't have a beard. Given that illustration in the first book, I totally expected one. I think it would have suited him better.

The books never said whether Snape had a beard or not, but now that you mention it I think it would be better for him to have one. I mean, if he doesn't wash his hair, why would he be bothered to shave?

Agreed. There's a reason why both Hans Gruber and the Sheriff of Nottingham had beards - darker, grimmer, sexierhawtter.
