It might matter to fans who identify with him because they're asexual too. There aren't too many of those in fiction. I'm trying to think of examples, all I can come up with are villains.

But that's just it - his sexuality wasn't really of relevance to the stories themselves. IDK, maybe my "privilege" is showing, but I just don't understand the point of looking for a fictional character to identify with on the level of one's sexuality. That's just... not the point of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. And if you're looking for it, then I guess you deserve the wank and ridiculousness that comes with it.

Just because you don't understand it, it doesn't mean that it's not something important to other people.

Honestly, if people say "this is important to me", it's better to just take their word for it. It'll save you from many senseless discussions and hurt feelings. (And a shitload of internet wank.)

Neither is John's, but there is some focus on him dating and marrying (esp. Mary Morstan, who he met during "Sign of the Four"). That's a statement about his sexuality. Focused on, no, but it is touched on. So why not Sherlock's?

I think John's sexuality was brought up to highlight how freaking dangerous a friendship with Sherlock can be. You can't really have a normal life with normal relationships because it puts people you love in danger and it makes having relationships that much harder. So it kinda WAS a focus of the ep.

It seems to me they're referring to the canon. For one thing, they're using "was", not "is"... the series is still going, while the canon is obviously not.

Because Arthur Conan Doyle wanted him to be the new superman, perfectly rational and above such base desires as lust. It's a Victorian thing. They didn't even have the term 'asexual' in those days.

The "point" is that it's nice to have real OR fictional people that you can identify with and look up to. I'm not asexual, but how is that hard to understand? That's like saying "I don't understand why women want to watch TV or movies with strong female characters? What's wrong with every female on TV just being a wife or secretary who's in two scenes and only has two lines? Isn't that fun for you to watch?"

I suppose so. But, I've never thought it's important to like or identify with characters. It's enough if they are well written and interesting.

For you, maybe. But you are certainly not everyone, and some people, including me, would like representations of people they are a little bit like, whether that similarity be sexuality or nonsexuality, disability, transness or other gender-skewing, or racial representation that isn't relegated to Magical Negro/Queer sidekick.

Why, for that matter, are you so against the idea of an asexual Sherlock Holmes? Why must everything be what you'd identify with?

See, I used to agree with you on that. As long as the character is interesting, nothing else matters.

But then I finally became comfortable with the fact that I'm a lesbian. And now I wish there were more lesbian characters on tv, etc. I still like het romances, Tuxedo Mask is still awesome... but I want a bit more of Haruka and Michiru on my screen, if you know what I mean? It doesn't have to be about their experiences as lesbians. It doesn't have to focus on their coming out, or their struggle against discrimination, or I don't know what. It's just nice to see that there are female characters who, like me, happen to like girls.

And similarly, asexual people are probably happy too to see someone who experiences something the way they do. The story doesn't have to focus on him being asexual, but just knowing that he is can be comforting.

Personally, I think it's pretty much left ambiguous whether he's asexual or not, so fighting about it could go on forever, but I do understand that it can strike a nerve if someone insists that he isn't.

Having someone to identify with is very important for many people who're different from 'the norm'. It's part of how you construct your own identity. You understand how other people see you and how you see yourself. Humans like to group things and categorise things and when we can't, we often become uneasy.

If you're actually interested in learning more it's worth checking out some basic information about identity in psychology. If not, then take it from me - just because you don't need to look for someone to identify with doesn't mean a lot of other people don't. Maybe you don't need to because you already have many interpretations of your identities to compare yourself with. Lots of us don't.

And it can come across as insulting when you throw that need to identify aside like you seem to have done in the last sentence of your comment. Also ignorant, but then that's why I'm bothering to reply. I'd prefer you to be informed and less hurtful via ignorance. Unless of course you were just intending to be hurtful anyway, in which case I imagine you've achieved that towards some people.
