she was a cheap shit character and people would have hated spacey's character if he wasn't awesome

He was the main character. Of course more time is going to be spent on him. And of course we're going to see most of the movie from his perspective. It isn't until the film branches out to show what the wife and daughter are up to while he isn't there that we gain a little sympathy for them.

Which is the point I'm pretty sure OP is completely missing. "OMG SHE WAS SUCH A SHREW" is because we're seeing 90% of the story through his eyes, and he's just as dysfunctional and shitty as she is.

he's an unreliable narrator. the movie's basically set up so that you have no choice but to agree with Spacey, which is shitty, because I don't think anyone involved in making the movie actually thought of him as an unreliable narrator.

I wouldn't call him an unreliable narrator. Telling a story from one characters' perspective doesn't make the character unreliable. Just the story. But that's not the point. It's a story about Spacey's mid-life crisis (or whatever you want to call it) so the perspectives of the other characters just aren't as important as the perspective of Spacey's character. It's his journey.

Yeah, they both had their problems regarding the marriage. But while he was portrayed as still being generally likable (if not dead inside), she was portrayed as aggravating, nagging and constantly on his case for things that were petty (fucking hell, the couch scene still pisses me off to this day. What the fuck do you want, you stupid fucking woman?!!)

okay so Annette Bening gets really upset and anal about the couch and her rose bushes and shit. Spacey gets really sarcastic and repressed about the same stupid shit.

how does the couch scene make her any less awful than the dinner scene where he throws the asparagus?
