That dinner scene was about where I went from vague confusion and boredom to out and out anger. Stuff like that happened sometimes when I was a kid, and well, it always meant that everybody else was scared shitless for the next few hours. It never escalated, thankfully (and wasn't necessarily the same family member every time), but that kind of expression of rage is so massively inappropriate to take out on your family. Ugh.

I very distinctly remember being eleven and having an assignment about distinguishing the color percentage in an M&M package, and me not getting what the fuck a percentage or a decimal point was supposed to quantify. And because my father is also kind of bad at maths, he got frustrated as well while trying to help me, and my mom and dad actually got into an out-and-out physical brawl, throwing each other into walls over who was allowed to show me what. I was terrified for years afterward.

My mom later told me it was all my fault. I know now that it wasn't, but that kind of selfishness/blame game in parents is what sets off my rage factor nowadays.

Oh, absolutely. That's part of why I think Revolutionary Road is such a superior film to AB- the neglect of the kids to the point where you almost forget they're parents is shown to be a bad thing.

...After reading the summary of Revolutionary Road on wiki, it's safe to say that's on the list of films that I am never going to watch (along with pretty much everything Aronofsky's ever done). Holy triggers and depression up the wazoo.

Yeaaah, it's a pretty damn depressing movie (though at least iirc in the last shot the father is playing with the kids).

Good call on the Aronofsky- I wish I'd never watched Black Swan.

Holy shit. That is messed up. You know this already, but it's not your fault and your parents are dicks.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
yeah exactly. I remember how terrifying that shit was when I was growing up, and I really hate how, in the movie, that's supposed to be like the moment when we're all so happy for him because he's finally standing up for himself, or something.

honestly I really really worry about people who came out of that movie thinking that Spacey was some kind of hero.

Same. It's one of those things where if I meet somebody and they rave about American Beauty I start side-eyeing them incredibly hard. like, to be fair, some of the people I knew who liked it were incredibly privileged teens who were probably high and liked the pretty colors, but I just don't have patience for films that applaud terrible fucking life decisions.
