Okay, maybe I'm completely wrong about this, and if I am I apologize profusely, but she doesn't look Asian at all in the games? None of the characters do, in my opinion.

don't know the game, but a Japanese person's perception of what makes someone look "more Japanese" can be pretty different from a foreigner's.

I like that video, because at the core it's mainly true, but the thesis of his argument is somewhat damaged by the fact that many of the examples of Japanese people he's chosen have done this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SMPB3X5Osc&feature=related), however, and the pictures of many of the "squinty-eyed" white people are just that: white people staring into lights and squinting. Also comparing 2/3 to 3/4 profiles, lawl.

I don't know, I thought Ashe, Vaan and Penelo had very Japanese features (aside from their hair colour).

Maybe I'm just terrible at recognizing those features then, because I definitely didn't think of them as such.

But I was wrong, as someone pointed out above.

I wouldn't say she looks Asian perse. But she definitely looks more Asian than the original design. IIRC the original design was very European.

Well aware of that story, and it's depressing. But hey, at least they knocked off that whole Tifa/Rinoa/Garnet thing.

I'm not sure it's a proper analogy, as there are a large number of black people in America. There's significantly less French people in Japan, if I understand correctly. I think a better comparison would be, say, taking an Indian actor/actress (as in the country, not as in native Americans) and altering their features to be more "white"... 'Cause altering the shape of his/her face seems like a different cuppa tea to changing their skin tone. Better or worse, no. But different, in this sense, because they were selling to a Japanese market. Which is, mainly, Japanese ethnicity. If it was selling first to the United States market, considering our core values are built upon the melting pot theory, we're expected to embrace differences and uniquities. That's the American way, in theory. Hence, I can see the issue being a bigger deal in the USA.

Given, yeah, it's still kinda ridiculous considering that FF:XII didn't take place in Japan, per se, but I can see how it makes MORE sense to have done in Japan than to do in the US.

... Just sayin'.

She doesn't look French or Japanese to me there. She looks more "uncanny valley" than anything...

That's what I think of most of these FF games now that they have super awesome graphic engines and can render awesome things; but they never look strictly like any race straight out to me, save XIII and that chocobo guy or Barrett but other than that I just see them as 3D models.

I'd like it if they could include nationalities but since it's not based in our world, I'm okay with them just looking like generic 3D models.

OP, what are your thoughts on Otacon from Metal Gear Solid? He was modelled after a Japanese man, and then modified to look more white/Jewish. (The game is Japanese, but aimed at getting an international audience.)

It's not one of the main reasons, but it is a contributing reason why I am disappointed with Square. All their character designs are starting to look the same when it comes to the leads... The ladies, especially.
