Good thing there are a lot of books like that right now, then. I hope you keep enjoying them, and find a real way out of your situation soon.

Of them I've only read the Hunger Games, but I too enjoy stories fitting that description so thanks for the recs OP.

Also, there's a bit of a sexist double standard at play in perception of literature IMHO because idealized and non-sexually-threatening women characters are considered the expected and accepted norm (as well as other typically male fantasies, such as being a space pirate or heist operative), whereas idealized and non-sexually-threatening men characters are just women writers and readers having stupid fantasies that they're not entitled to.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps I should clarify, also, that while women can of course have fantasies of being space pirates and participating in heists and other action-adventure stuff, typically these characters and situations are written by men, about men, for men. And that's the norm, which is what I was referring to when I said "typically male fantasies," though I phrased it poorly. Any deviation in any part of the aforementioned chain is typically considered aberrant, although at least with games like Mass Effect there is the option to make Shepard a woman instead of a man.

I would stay away from Hush, Hush ; the designated love interest, Patch, is threatening.

Wait, what?

From what I remember about 'Hush, Hush', Patch was VERY sexually-threatening. :/

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
yeeeeeeah...OP, not trying to undermine what you got out of the story because of course we all read different things into a character's actions, but from what very little I've read of the book Patch made me incredibly uncomfortable.

I thought the same thing. Mind, I only read excerpts online and didn't go through the whole book because reeeally not my thing, but those excerpts had behavior on par with the worst of Inuyasha dubcon sagas D:

[identity profile] wake-the-dragon.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had to put down 'Hush, Hush' because of how much of a creep Patch was.

Not trying badmouth you OP, just Patch isn't exactly non-threatening.

OP

I agree. When I was making this secret I just searched 'YA books' in Google and found that image. Guess I should have looked a little closer, though! Patch IS creepy and threatening.

The Body Finder and Linger ♥ I, too, love these kinds of books. I'm glad that they can provide an escape for you right now and I hope that you can get out of your situation into a better one sooner rather than later.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
i bought one of maggie stiefvater's books (shiver) last year and never got around to reading it. any good? i read twilight and hated it, so i'm hoping it's a step up from that.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
The guy in "Hush, Hush" wasn't sexually threatening?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't really call 'The Hunger Games' silly :b

But all the more power to you!

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I can only tolerate romance in YA books or adult books where the romance is a minor side plot. Romance novels for adults don't appeal to me, because I hate all the dominant, arrogant men who always seem to be condescending to or slightly talking down to the female character, and the rapey ones are obviously even worse.

I also am getting a bit tired of the idea I see all the time that nicer, less manly male love interests are only for silly teenagers and adult women should like rough, manly men. Stupid stereotype.
