you know, i read the series and didn't like it, but the thing about jacob that frustrated me was that his actions in eclipse were such a 180 from what we'd already learned about him. stephenie meyer realized she'd created a more attractive, safe, normal character than edward, and in a hasty effort to backtrack and get the ship ~she~ wanted, she performed a total character assassination on jacob. it was just the laziest, shittiest writing and the worst plot device i've ever seen.

Yeah, this. It was so glaringly obvious what she was doing, turning Jacob into such a bad, pushy guy in the latter two books while continuing to prop Edward - who was always more fucked up in his treatment of Bella, just in a subtle way - as the perfect, selfless hero and love interest. I would've given Meyer props if she'd kept Jacob good, but acknowledged that Bella couldn't love him like Edward - and this is coming from someone who was bored to raging during all their scenes. But no, she had to be, like you said, lazy about it.
