Eeeeeehhhhhhh in the context of the workplace I think you might have a point, but our mentor/mentored is much closer to sensei/gakusei or shisho/deshi. We really don't have it in the context of upperclassmen/underclassmen in schools. Freshmen are not expected to listen to seniors unless that senior is about to put their fist up their ass, and seniors are not expected to look after freshmen beyond asskicking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an ardent supporter of the DON'T USE JAPANESE IF THERE'S AN ENGLISH FUCKING EQUIVALENT camp, but senpai/kouhai is one of those where I can kinda see why you might want to keep it in. Especially in the school context. Plus, these days the chances someone watching an anime doesn't know what those terms mean is almost zero. It's like how back in the 1900s you'll see a lot of "Japanese feudal knight" when describing samurai, and now you just see samurai. Everyone knows what samurai are; but no, Japan didn't invent feudal knights, either.
