Why is it that kids aren't allowed to enjoy adult fandoms, but adults are allowed to dominate the fandoms of, say, Harry Potter and Avatar:the Last Airbender? Why is it that when an adult participates in a kid fandom, it just shows how open minded and fun they are, but when a kid participates in fandom it's all "but this might ruin your pure untainted holy little mind!!"

LOL I have yet to see "adults are allowed to dominate (youth material) fandoms".
Or if they do so, it's because experience makes you a more interesting writer / artist / poster. Chances are that your contribution will be more elaborated than the average 12-yrs old.

The same average 12-yrs old will also find posts from adults boring, and will relate more to other similar-aged fans.

But it's not a matter of age. I'll gladly read and reply to people regardless of their age, as long as they can carry on a conversation.
I did hear my lot of "ewww, why are you adults into my fandom?", though. Adults participate into kid fandom because real life with a job makes you need something cheerful to get back to, sometimes.

Because adults are older than kids? Do you really want an eleven year old in a Wire or Sopranos fandom? Adults getting in touch their inner child is inherently less disturbing than children getting introduced to adult themes.

I once had a woman in a landcomm complain about a Criminal Minds episode where the bad guy (in show parlance, the "UNSUB") fed his victims' corpses to pigs because, and I quote, "now my five year-old is afraid of pigs."

Why the Hell was your five year-old watching a TV-14 show about serial killers, lady?!
