Um, is this a secret? I'm not a fan of Power Rangers, but it feels like it's pretty aware of its own cheesiness, from what I've gathered.

Power Rangers amps the cheese factor up past 11.

<3 I have determined it is where I gained an appreciation for terrible, awful, cringe-inducing puns.

That said... to the OP - cheesiness does not appeal to everybody, so... carry on?

[identity profile] second-batgirl.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much exactly. :D

[identity profile] revieloutionne.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Merely aware of its cheesiness?

It makes fondue. Delicious, delicious fondue.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I didn't want to say anything extreme because I've only seen clips and never an episode. But that's what it always seemed like. But yay, cheesiness! =D I love things that embrace wonderful cheese.

[identity profile] revieloutionne.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure a large part of my camp sensibility came from Power Rangers.

How much so varies by season, but it is definitely a show that takes not taking itself seriously seriously.

(It's not for nothing that the post-apocalyptic season is possibly the funniest.)

Once again, Rev, you say exactly what I wanted to say, only way way better than I ever could have.

I mean... RPM made a very clear point of it (http://youtu.be/ANNqA7A7XNI).

The Power Rangers? Cheesy?!? SURELY YOU JEST!

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Power Rangers! It's the cheesiest!

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch it when it first came out for the same reasons, anon. It embarrassed the crap out of me. But, then I got into it. Not quite sure how it happened, but I think there was just something there past the cheesiness that spoke to me. I like the world they live in (monsters not withstanding). Just the general acceptance and friendship of the main cast, etc. It's cheesy, but it's hopeful? (And everyone is so pretty.)

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, the enjoyment of Power Rangers is all in the cheese. C'mon, it's right there in the introduction - 'An intergalactic sorceress of evil has been released from her space dumpster? Alpha, bring me five teenagers with attitude to wear spandex and pilot giant robots to fight her!'

Congratulations.

You clearly were an intellectual super-genius as a child. Your impeccable taste could only be compared to your refinement. You were absolutely, completely, irrefutably, better than everyone and anyone as a child, and, of course, this means that you are currently the best person in existence that has ever walked this Earth.

You are better than everyone. Those plebes? Sure, their tender, malleable, weak minds were swayed by the filth that the media indoctrinated them with -- but not you, OP. Never you. You always know better and the rest of us can only hope to follow in your footsteps one day.

Is that what you wanted to hear?

Re: Congratulations.

LMAO mte

this could apply to the ~I hated Disney movies~ thread too.

Re: Congratulations.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Someones taking things a little personally. lol.

Trying a little too hard to feel insulted just because OP doesn't like the show IMO.

Honestly, some kids DID take it seriously in the past. It's honestly cheesy but there you go.

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the cheesiness of PR. I mean, seriously- TEENAGERS WITH ATTITUDE!

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Me neither. I couldn't understand what my childhood friends enjoyed about it. It looked so cheap and awkward. The characters were dull and the acting was mostly flat. I couldn't keep a straight face watching it, even when I was so lenient of everything back then. Most things were cheesy at the time, but this took it to an embarrassing level. Heh!

But I guess it makes for good MST in hindsight.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea. NO. IDEA. I rewatched it in college for the first time in, like, a decade, and was completely stunned to realize that (a) RITA'S NOT REALLY SPEAKING ENGLISH and (b) THAT'S NOT THEM IN THE SUITS. Among other things. Childhood = ruined.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I remember thinking back when the Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers quit/were fired and their voices changed when they were morphed that it meant that now it was actually them in the suits. Ah, the thoughts of a seven/eight year old...

[identity profile] lazzchan.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
hehe... this shows exemplifies the cheese. I watch the super sentai shows now-- something like twenty years after childhood has 'ended' and it's still cheesy as hell. Newest one? Space pirates! :D

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Oh man. I tried to watch power rangers as a kid but never could get into it at all myself. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief. But I tried. I really did, because a few kids at school loved to play power rangers at school at break time and I didn't want to be left entirely on my own (It was a very small primary school I attended so...). But even then I just couldn't believe the main characters, or the monsters at all- and I kept doing a 'head tilt'. But yeah. Never actually liked it myself as a show at all. So I just continued to try in the hopes of the next 'fad' being something I was more into. (But it wasn't then came simply sitting and talking about SOAPS, which was WORSE! I mean there was a brief interlude with Pokemon in the middle of this soap obsession which went on into secondary school, but that was unfortunatly short lived).

I preferred the old TMNT cartoon which was on massive re-runs I think at the time over here (though it was called hero turtles here). (Technically TMNT's old cartoon was made before the first power rangers right?). But I could never find other people who wanted to be turtles or liked the show. But I loved it.

Because of course giant mutated reptiles learning martial arts in the sewers while breaking the fourth wall every episode was ~way~ more realistic.

We all probably have our (cheesy) nostalgic things OP. I hated, hated Power Rangers as a show but it's not like I can really judge people who like them given my own nostalgic cheesy ass show- mine just was a cartoon.

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Try the original Super Sentai. It is AWESOME! :D

[identity profile] revieloutionne.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Actually it's pretty much exactly as cheesy. Sometimes more.

Which I LOVE, mind you, but if the cheese turns you off PR, you won't like Sentai either.
