ARE YOU SAYING I'M FAT, OP? 'CAUSE THAT'S JUST RUDE.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I find your privilege to be very concerning, OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, OP sounds like a jerk. >:(

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps that will be incentive for you to improve your English?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I wouldn't worry about this. Because English is my first/only language, and no matter how carefully I word my secrets or rewrite them to sound better, people still misinterpret them. So I've just given up.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Secrets get misinterpreted all over the place, no matter what your language is. I think if you just try your best, it'll be fine. :)

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OP if you want an English beta, PM me. I'll never reveal your identity. It won't stop all misunderstandings but I can help you clarify your intentions.

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fandom and internet. No matter how well worded it is, you will ALWAYS have people misinterpreting what you write.
Because it's hard to see clearly from that far on their high horse.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad. There are a lot of people born in America with English as their first language who still can't speak English very well.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Step one: spellcheck.

I mean this honestly and uncritically. People have a tendency to get bitchy over every tiny thing. That includes a misspelled word. And while spellcheck won't catch everything, it will help a lot. And while a secret with perfect grammar and spelling can still be taken out of context and misinterpreted, it may help avoid putting people on the offensive rage-fit from the start.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, do you mention that English is not your first language when you make them? I know it's annoying to do, but I find that fandom tends to be a lot more forgiven of mistakes in that case. Doesn't mean that your secret will be interpreted perfectly, but it could help.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, OP, happens to everyone.

Good thing is, you're anon - nobody will trace the secret back to you, if you don't let them. Another good thing is that if your message comes across in a 'wrong' way, you don't have to feel guilty about it, because THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU MEANT. Why should you feel guilty about something you didn't do?

Walking on eggshells in another thing, but you have to remember fandomsecrets is a community with lots and lots of readers. You're bound to piss someone off despite your best intentions.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not getting mad because of what they thought you meant. They're getting mad because of what you said. If you didn't say what you mean, it's not their fault. And I understand if nuances of the language or whatever had you saying something you didn't mean, but the onus is on you to be all "Yo, sorry there! I fucked up!" when you realize you did not say what you meant to say.

Trust me, nobody is wasting time trying to peer into you heart through a 600x600 pixel secret. They're just taking your words at face value.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes. And sometimes people read what someone wrote and, when it doesn't make immediate sense to them, they try to place it into a different context to try to make sense of it. And sometimes, what they come up with is the WRONG interpretation.

Maybe you've never seen it happen, but there has been more than one occasion where I read a secret, look at the comments, and realize immediately that the sea of angry responses it got were because everyone extrapolated a much more complex implication than the face value secret. Believe it or not, this happens much more with short, concise secrets - not because OP didn't tell the full story, but because many people tend to assume that everything is more complicated, questionable, and morally unsuitable than it is.

No, I'm not saying that they make up a majority, or even a significant portion, but when they do appear, they appear in hordes and are VERY vocal.

TL:DR; Bitches like to bitch. Anonymity gives them an excuse. It's not unheard of, and OP's probably been the victim, so to speak, at least once. You're not always right, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Communication involves two people, and it isn't the total fault of one of those two people when a misunderstanding happens.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
This. I wrote a secret once and kept it short. My mistake though, because my secret was in reference to a fandom trope particular to that fandom.

But it was obvious most commenters hadn't even touched that fandom and so had misinterpreted my secret as some dumb secret about yaoi or something.

As I say, my mistake. Next time I'll make sure to spell my secrets out and make them tl;dr so no one gets confused before they make passive aggressive and bitchy remarks about a fandom they don't understand.

[identity profile] archerstar.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Spellcheck is your friend. Finding a beta is also a good idea.

[identity profile] yui-hime.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate playing the Devil's advocate, but the spelling errors don't do much for your case, OP. Making a secret about being misunderstood, and then having two obvious mistakes in it that a spellchecker would have caught, just makes it look like you don't really care, or even like you're deliberately messing with people.

For future reference, "misenterprate" should be "misinterpret", and "ment" should be "meant".

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously OP totally meant to mispell their secret. =/

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a native English speaker, and people still misinterpret my secrets. My advice would be to make a secret, then look at it a day later with a fresh mind and see if it still seems obvious what you're talking about. If not, reword it.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It has nothing to do with your spelling and grammar, and everything to do with the fact that people simply interpret everything differently. What might seem OK to you might be offensive to someone else, and vice-versa. Hell, this happens in real life all the time. It is human nature. It's how many arguments, fights and disagreements start.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Also OP a lot of people on FS are really quite mean and judgemental. Try not to take it to heart.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-17 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
oh for goodness' sake at least make an attempt to sound genuine by maybe looking at how non-english speakers write. this is pathetic. it's not even trolling- what do you hope to achieve?
