I have fun with those kinds of people by showing them things like:

Either that or the classic "2=1" fallacy that's based on a division by zero. It's always a winner.

I love that perimeter problem! I've never seen that one before! I love seeing things like that and figuring out where the flaw is!

Took me a little while to work it out for this one. The key is, we are used to seeing mathematical arguments in the form "Value X cannot be calculated directly; however, Process P can be iterated any number of times and with each iteration, it more closely approaches Value X; therefore, if we can determine the value that P approaches as it's iterated to infinity, that value must be Value X."

However, this is not an argument in that form, because the process does not more closely approach the desired value with each iteration; it just stays the same no matter how many times it's iterated. We could create a square with perimeter 1000 around the circle, and replace it with an octagon with perimeter 1000, and replace that with a 16-sided figure with perimeter 1000 - but that wouldn't prove that the perimeter was 1000, only that we were refusing to close the distance between 1000 and the correct perimeter of the circle.

when i read this, i clamped my mouth shut and growled involuntarily.
