(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)I disagree that most people feel that way (about the epilogue) because of fandom--but maybe only because I know I don't, though I can't say that I speak for the majority. So you might be right. Still--
I have a pretty well-established appreciation of open-ended endings in books that I have no intention of ever writing fanfiction for; and I think it lessens the series impact to say 'and here we are 15 (?) years later, and everything's neat and tidy!' It returns the story--which Rowling had allowed to grow with the characters and readers--to the domain of a children's book. Which is fine, maybe that's what she wanted to do to temper some of the darkness in the later books, and it's fine if people appreciate it.
tl;dr: An open end is better for fandom, sure, but there are other reasons to support it as well.
