Yes, and fans treating a real person as if he/she was a character is what makes it creepy. If a person plays a very over-the-top character, then yes, one could say "I'm only shipping this crazy persona he's made for himself." But ProtonJon isn't playing any bizarre persona. He's just playing and discussing games. There's a difference.

Let's say you and I worked together in the same building, along with many other people. One day, you walk past my desk to find several notebooks full of art and stories shipping you with one of our co-workers. Someone you haven't even expressed any romantic interest in and haven't even really interacted with beyond a professional level. Just pages and pages of stories of you going out with him, h/c stories, genderswap... and tons of art of you kissing and cuddling this man you're not even good friends with.

Wouldn't that be disconcerting? Would it not be even more freaky if you asked me about it and I not only said "well yeah it's adorable!", but I insisted that there was all sorts of "subtext" there to back up my stories? You, like other real people, are not characters. You have your own lives and motivations, likes and dislikes. To treat a living person like a fictional character is just off.

To answer your question, yeah, it would be disconcerting. As I said, I understand what you mean, but to me it's just not the same. Your example is a RL one, and this is happening on the internet. Nobody is the same person online and offline, just like nobody is the same with their teachers/parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles/friends and so on. We all adjust our behavior, some of us more subtly, others less, according to our surroundings. It's this that makes ProtonJon an online persona to me - he doesn't go around trying to kill himself/other people IRL, that sort of thing. RPF is taking that persona, that concept of a murderous ProtonJon and expanding on it, making up new motivations, likes and dislikes as you go. I'm sure you'll completely agree that at this point we're not talking about ProtonJon anymore, we're talking about a character based on ProtonJon, who has the same name and happens to be in similar circumstances. We're treating a fictional character as a real person, not a real person as a fictional character.
