15. ....*sobs*

24. I don't hate Martha, she just strikes me as a rather static character. It doesn't really feel like she does that much. To me, at least. Feel free to flame away?

Oh, and 8 is just as moronic for being so closed-minded as the people they consider morons. So there.

Not the secret maker but a rabid Martha fan

So, y'know - reviving the Doctor in Smith and Jones was nothing. Helping him save the world in the Globe was nothing. Luring the Lazarus creature away from the crowd, and using the sonic screwdriver in episode 6 was nothing. And saving Ten's ass when he was John Smith was nothing. Tolerating him treating her like crap for months in 1913 was nothing. Putting up with racist schoolchildren and being a scullery maid was nothing. Getting a job to support the Doctor in 1969 whilst he worked on his timey-wimey thing was nothing. Realising that Yana was a timelord with that watch was nothing.

Yeah, she's the worst assistant ever.

Martha's effective, she just hasn't changed much (I think that's what <lj user=chocomimi meant by "static"). All that I can really think about character developement over the course of the season is that she fell for the Doctor, and that's about it. That's not to say that she hasn't gotten shit done, because she definitely has, it's just that Martha in "Smith in Jones" is the same as Martha in "Sound of Drums".

I never said that, I was referring to the It doesn't really feel like she does that much statement. :/

I think she's changed a LOT tbqh. She even told the Doctor to STFU in 'The Sound of Drums' and she's going to change a LOT more in the next episode, because really, it's all down to her now.

Also not the secret maker. Or the anonymous poster you're talking to. Just a huge Martha fan and busybody. Sorry.

I do think there's a huge noticeable change between SAJ-Martha and SOD-Martha. Somebody on [livejournal.com profile] lifeonmartha recently did a compare between the earliest posts on her MySpace blog and her most recent post. And she's changed a lot.

It's not been a dramatic change, it's been slow and built up from episode to episode and usually in the background--but it's totally there. (SAJ-Martha, if placed into an SOD-situation, would certainly have tried to help as many people as she could. I'm not totally convinced she would have taken Jack's space/time hopper and gone off on her own to save the entire world singlehandedly.)

the earliest posts on her MySpace blog and her most recent post.

Oh, the myspace. This brings up a whole other issue with Martha that I want to briefly rant about. I think part of the reason I didn't like her was because of the BBC and RTD banging into my head "YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE MARTHA, DAMMIT" I hate it when a network/writer does that, because eventually I end up resenting the character because I feel like I'm being forced to like them. The myspace was, to me, RTD saying "See, she's just like you! Love her or else we'll kill that puppy over there!" I'd rather make up my own mind about a character than have a writer tell me.

/oddly placed rant.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. She has changed some, but not to the extent that I would have liked. I think it's partly because with Rose there was this clear character arc; it was all about finding out Who She Was, and she was really on the way by PotW. With Martha, I'm not sure what her motivation is, and I'm a little frustrated.

Aww. Martha's MySpace, to me, is like Mickey's website--I think of it solely in terms of viral marketing. It's fairly cool viral marketing, actually. If it's designed to make us think that she's JUST LIKE US OMG it fails on several levels because I loathe MySpace on principle. But as viral marketing and helping maintain the illusion that it's a part of the real world and the Doctor could maybe choose me as his next companion it's fairly cool. Not as cool as Mickey's website, though. Why has no one taken over updating Mickey's website for season 3?

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I guess we will! :) Rose's arc vexes me because it seems, to me, to be a negative character arc; she winds up in worse shape than when she started. Despite getting her Dead Father(tm) alive and rich, her mom happy and pregnant, TotallyAwesomeMickey!(tm), and a fabulous job, she's miserable about it, and she started off with her Dead Father still dead, her mom clingy and overprotective, Mickey also clingy and insecure, and a job that she apparently didn't enjoy working in a shop, and was much happier with it. And that bothers me immensely.

Er. If that makes sense.

Agree to disagree! Ys! That!

Martha fangirl here--but you shouldn't be flamed, IMO. I mean, I wish everyone would love her, of course, but not every character will grab every fan. Assuming you're not running around trolling Martha fans into a constant tizzy, lol, it's all good.
