I have a similar dilemma. For many, many series, I would LOVE to read, watch and experience the original and almost every adaptation. But the more time I spend on a single fandom, the less time I get to explore others.

You're not a crazy fan. That title is reserved for those who think less of fans who didn't read every tankoubon-exclusive bonus page or catch all the Easter eggs in the xth year anniversary edition remake DVD.

unless a lot of material or ~plot~ is skipped, then there is generally little reason to check out the original material. why would you want to waste time going over the same story twice?

Don't sweat it too much. Yes, anime-manga fans get all angry and holier-than-thou when they read the original source and you don't, but fuck them. That's immature. Just find fellow anime!only fans. :3

I recently started watching this anime and have really enjoyed it. I too have not read a page of the manga yet, though I haven't really tried. I wouldn't worry too much about it, OP-- enjoy what you enjoy!

The anime is absolutely gorgeous so I understand comparing that to the manga.

Yes, you are a hypocrite until you stop looking down on people who watch the anime and don't read the manga (also sometimes anime is the original). Adaptations are valid. Changes in adaptations are not inherently bad, and some people prefer the changed version. I've been told countless times how much better the Fullmetal Alchemist manga is compared to the first anime, but I liked the anime version better. Also plenty of anime are based on light novels (Baccano, Haruhi Suzumiya, Spice and Wolf, Welcome to the NHK, Durarara I think...), some of which never get translated, or only get translated after the anime are huge hits. I ended up not reading the NHK novel because I really liked the otaku-issue-focused anime and didn't really want a version of the story that brought drug culture into it, because that's a different story.

Anyway it sounds like maybe you get it now, so the thing to do is not to fret about how you're not living up to your own high standards, but to realize that the standards are arbitrary and elitist and thus to be ignored or scorned.
