Just a mask held in place by the glasses. Most amazing character on that show, SERIOUSLY

Dare I ask what's supposed to be under it?

You see it on the show--not much, I'm afraid; his eye and most of his cheek and jaw are missing and there are scars on his forehead and throat as well. He was a sniper in WWI. :\ It's pretty gnarly, and it's a really amazing effect.

I have a slightly morbid fascination with facial disfigurements, if you must know, so I'm naturally interested. Also I've been pondering on watching this series.

Well, since you asked--basically I was very innocently lurking around the set and he just sproinged out of nowhere and surprised me, and he is so RIDICULOUSLY good-looking and I am so in love with that character that I just froze and couldn't talk and he just sort of looked like "...WTF" and I wanted to die. It went on from there. Aaaaaugh.

I love everything about this man and would totally bang that 'till it broke even though he kills people for funsies. HE'S A SCRAPBOOKING ASSASSIN WHO JUST WANTS LOVE.

I REALLY WANT HIM TO GET WITH MARGARET even though she's with Nucky or whatever. But after his whole 'I'm the Tin Man' thing and she apologized for not treating him like a normal person, I ship it hard. Probably not gonna happen, though.

I'd be happy if they could just be friends. Richard needs friends, especially ones who don't ask for favors in terms of "these people need to die." More plausible than a romantic relationship between him and Margaret, but still unlikely to happen, at least this season with Jimmy and Nucky at each other's throats. :(

He is amazing. Such an incredible character--and I love him mask on or off.

Well, he is the greatest character on that show! I don't blame you at all. He walks the line of unnerving (not because of the face but because he's obviously deeply disturbed) and vulnerable so well and the actor is amazing.
