:\ If she wanted to wait that's fine, she's not obligated to have sex if she's not ready just because Cory wants to. There's more than enough sex on tv anyway, and I don't see how it would make it this particular show more interesting.

Also there wouldn't have been that funny scene on their honeymoon.

[identity profile] meiko-matsui.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
This. ♥

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I never paid attention to the sex thing, I really didn't like how young they got married though. I felt like Topanga and Cory should have broke up in college and dated other people, and then if the writers really wanted to go that route, have them get married at the end.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
They addressed both of your points several times in the series. Also there were many examples of people around them breaking up and finding new partners. I don't think your complaint is valid at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you have to agree with me but I just didn't like them getting together young, regardless of if the series addressed the point or not. Topanga and Cory were supposed to be the show OTP but it was hard to route for them when they often didn't seem compatible or when they made dumb decisions.

I also just generally didn't like where the writing went as the kids got older, it was a very light and fun comedy in the early years (with the occasional drama) then it became too much drama and not enough comedy and the plots got more stupid and ridiculous. I was young but even I could see the problems.

I thought they did break up in college once? Or was that in middle/high school?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
They for sure broke up when they were young, but they were married by the time when they were going to college so I don't think they ever broke up then.

[identity profile] mochibuni.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They broke up in middle school and got back together (Cory goes to Disney World to get her back). They also broke up in high school (Cory cheated on Topanga during a ski trip) and got back together. Topanga called off their engagement in college (her parents divorced, causing her to not believe in lasting love), effectively breaking them up, and then they got back together and got married.

I love BMW. ;-;

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Why the hate on this secret?

The OP said they thought it would have made their storyline more interesting if they had started having sex young, which it probably would have. A lot of drama could have come from it, not only from them but from friends & family who found out about it.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't have made it more interesting. It would've made it trite and bland.

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
And that's your opinion. But guess what? The OP obviously has a different one.

I think part of it is the fact that OP said Topanga MADE him wait for sex

Yeah OP, Topanga is such a frigid bitch. How dare she not have sex with her boyfriend (or husband, since I think that's when they actually had sex for the first time) until she was ready? The nerve

Also, if you want to see drama about young people having sex, then I shall direct you too EVERY OTHER SHOW ON TV ABOUT TEENAGERS

It would have made for a more interesting storyline, but it would have set a bad example to the young teenagers watching. Even if they didn't go all "duh hurr they did it on the tv so it's okay!" (which, sadly, some people DO), teenagers do take into account tv as a window into the outside world, since it is a reflection of society, and all, yadda yadda, and, even if only subconsciously, that kind of thing sticks as a mental reference of what other teenagers normally do. I can see the writers decided not to go that route.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because a girl keeping her self respect and doing what she wants is just so god damn annoying and uninteresting. He should have dumped her.

LOL nice slut shaming
You don't lose self-respect because you choose to have sex. Just like you don't lose it by choosing not to have sex. It's just a choice.

This secret skeeves me for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
ugh, no kidding. And exactly how young is OP talking? Because in that picture they look like 11 or 12 (man, Cory has some baby-face going on there). Way to be creepy.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's cause the OP picked a picture where they're so young. It's creepy.

OP: Figure out Tapanga's personality. Then we'll talk.

This is the best reply in the entire thread.

DragonLady

If that had happened, Topanga would have been really OOC. I loved seeing a character on TV who wanted to wait; I think the show was better for not focusing on sex a whole lot.

[identity profile] heartsyhawk.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you are of course entitled to your own opinion, OP. But frankly the fact that they didn't hook up until they were ready to was what made it more interesting to me. That's fairly uncommon in teen shows.

I don't like your attitude about Topanga being the problem though. If a girl is not ready to have sex she shouldn't have to just because her boyfriend wants it. Ever. If it was that big a problem for him he could have easily gone out and found somebody with low enough self-esteem she'd sleep with him for some cheap pretend validation.

Furthermore, neither Corey nor Topanga was ready for sex until it actually happened, and that was the main point. Off the top of my head I can think of two episodes (the prom and the Very Special Episode about the girl being abused by her father) where at least one of them thought sex was what they wanted and needed only to realize they wanted it to be special and meaningful and at the right time, or they shouldn't rush into it because it is what everyone expects or is doing themselves, or they might not be quite as ready for the consequences as they thought. It was refreshing to have a teen dramedy or soapcom or whatever they call it these days not glorify sex for the sake of having sex. You want that maybe instead of Boy Meets World, you should go get involved with 7th Heaven (when Simon had sex and the world about fell to pieces over it) or One Tree Hill.

Frankly, I was so glad they avoided the teen-pregnancy plot-tumor that would have inevitably happened. The words trite and cliche don't properly convey my absolute revulsion at how Hollywood handles that scenario.
