(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 03:44 am (UTC)(link)When I was eight, I was given a tiny crappy plastic aquarium that killed every fish I tried to put in it. :( I stopped buying fish after the third one because I didn't want to kill any more.
I never really LIKED the fish because the food was smelly and they didn't have a great deal of personality, but they were a good way of showing my parents I was a responsible pet owner and could possibly handle more difficult pets (I'd successfully raised frogs before this). My parents knew I was trying and wasn't harassing them or overfeeding them or that the tank was too dirty- it was just a terrible fish-killing tank.
A few months after I flushed my last fish, I was given a hamster and a year and a half later, I got my dog as a hand-me-down from a neighbor and for thirteen years he was the best dog I could have ever asked for. I'm nervous to get another because I don't know if another would ever click so well with me as my old one.
/TLDR pet owning history
I get really upset when dogs (and to a lesser extent, cats) are threatened in horror movies. Like, I had to turn John Carpenter's Thing off after the dog kennel scene because I was heaving. Who gives a damn about the humans- I always want to save the animals. :(
